Anyone play golf with a Dog?

We are adopting a Rat Terrier (much Cooler than the name implies) from a Rescue outfit on thursday. I want to give him sometime to acclimate to the new surroundings, but then I want to get him out on the course with me. They are an Active dog, so I know he won't have problems keeping up.

I was playing at a home course last week and a guy showed up with a Golden Retriever. It had saddlebags that the guy had made that was his disc bag. The dog was his caddie. THEN, when he ganked a shot into the woods, he sent the dog in after it. When the dog found the disc, it stayed put and barked till he got there. How freekin cool is that?

So mostly, wondering if anyone golfs with there dogs and what kind of experience it is? Do you recommend it?

I have a pair of black labs.  I've had them since they were six months old and I started training them to find and retrieve discs as soon as we got them.  They play almost every round with me.  I love having the option of sending my dogs down after errant shots, or into the swampy areas.  They have also recovered over 200+ discs in the last four years, so they are local course heroes.

Yeah, dogs don't generally fly as well as plastic tho.  Oh... wait... Nevermind.

There was a Golden named Jack that used to play @Morley(I forget his owner's name). It was always great to play a round with Jack. After everybody threw, Jack would go and lick every disc on the ground. If a disc was in the tree, Jack would sit patiently underneath. RIP Jack.

In the group I play with at my course there are 3 dog owners. 1 has a dog that just walks with us and waits to see a rabbit to chase. Another is more active, likes to go chase the disc until they land then waits for the next drive. The last one, that drives me crazy, will run around the teebox until you throw and chase you disc down. He pics up disc from time to time and the owner just yells at him. So all round I got a dog at my feet or picking up my disc, and a guy yelling loudly while im throwing. Very annoying.

 

So if i'm kinda iffy on dongs on the course, but if there dogs are trained I see not problem with it.

When ever I've brought my dog with me to play I never seem to shoot well. My dog is a terrier and brining him is just more trouble than it's worth. I can't let him off the leash or he runs.  I end up spending the whole round trying to untangle him from the leash.

It's the brand. Shape, aerodynamics......
