Disc dyeing help (can't stop the bleeding!!!)

I've been trying to dye discs lately using sign vinyl as a template but it seems that every time i get very bad bleeding. when i dye a disc i usually use star plastic or champion/z plastic and it's always a new disc,( no cuts or burrs) and i always make sure to squidgy the bubbles out and i'm using rit dye in a pan on low heat. is this crappy vinyl with bad adhesive? if anyone one out there has any suggestions as to what i might be doing wrong or could point me in the direction of some proven high quality vinyl that would be greatly appreciated.

this is my "el diablo" dye with a tecnique called "saran Wrap" for the crystalized or smoke look. Also did the "Saran Wrap" on my Suicide Girls disc as well.

I read somewhere that you can use elmer's glue to mask off portions. Has anyone tried this?

I've tried elmers and it does work decently if you let it dry enough. I don't recommend it though. the vinyl or contact paper seems to work better and wont melt if you leave the disc in the dye too long like elmers might. not sure since I've never left a dis in the dye long enough to melt/reliquify the glue but thats just what i think :)

Cran glue works better. Higher viscosity. Stays where you put it.

Excel Light Duty Knife Surgically sharp (360?)

A small set of Jewerly tweezers

1 box of Black Rit Dye 1 1/8 Ounce

1 box of Golden Yellow Rit Dye 1 1/8 Ounce

2 inch wide Scotch Packing Tape

Turpenoid Natural (Wrong =/)

I like the dye you posted here. Not bad for a newbie. As a newbie myself, I feel for you. I hate when my dyes bleed. By now I'm sure you've already got your acetone. If not, I know you can get a 16 oz. bottle of it in the health and beauty section at Walmart. It's called ONYX 100% acetone, and it works great. It goes for around $2.50. Look by the nail polish remover. Best of luck!

Could not imagine doing it with anything else...this is something that fascinates me Ive made a few for my girl and a few friends nothing to write home about sort of another disc golf hobby...there is some great disc golf art on here.

I am a newbie to dyeing discs and I have not tried contact paper yet. Is it the same or better than sign vinyl? I'm afraid the dye will bleed through.

I use Contact brand clear adehesive. I have dyed about 20+ discs and have not had a single problem yet. It costs $5.99 for a 30ft roll vs. God only knows how much for sign vyinal. Get it at Wal-mart in the kitchen section!

contact paper works fine, i used half a packet of dye for a big sauce pan 2 inches deep in water, dyed the discs really well, only took a couple minutes to completely dye the plastic on low heat, just barely steaming. make sure to press the edges with a blunt object to seal them (no bleeding)

just use your wal-mart contact paper. I am over 200 dyes and if I have any bleeds, its from not rubbing the edges down well enough. It is way less expensive then sign vinyl. I normal "soak" discs for 30 mintues per color in water warm enough you can stick your hand in there. One time I forgot a disc, woke up the next morning and saw it, rinsed it nad it never bled through or anything!
