New Media Meets Niche Sports, as Professional Disc Golf Association Prepares for Live Internet TV Broadcast of the United States Disc Golf Championship in October

September 18, 2009 (Appling, Georgia)--The Professional Disc Golf Association will make history in October as it broadcasts the sport’s first Internet TV production live from the 2009 United States Disc Golf Championship at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina. DiscGolfPlanet.tv will serve as a promotional, informational, and broadcast portal for the event.

“The entire disc golf community is buzzing about the prospect of bringing our sport’s most prestigious event live to every computer screen on the planet during our real-time broadcast,” said John G. Duesler, Jr., PDGA Director of Marketing and Communications. “Our players and fans and the whole disc golf industry have been clamoring for years now to get disc golf onto live television. With the advent of ip television technology, and especially our recent partnerships with Todocast and EPlanet Media, we now have the potential to fulfill that dream…just on the computer screen instead of the television.”

Live coverage of the 2009 United States Disc Golf Championship will happen over the four days of competition (October 7-10), with each day’s production lasting approximately 6 hours. Given the popularity of the event, as well as the duration, the broadcast will feature a potent combination of 4-6 camera-coverage throughout the course, live interviews with notables from the entire disc golf industry, a long menu of interactive features through which all viewers can participate, and pre-packaged videos that feature some of the top stories emerging from this year’s PDGA National Tour.

Disc golf fans should register right now to secure their place during the Live Internet broadcast. There is an option to register and donate to the production, which will help demonstrate to our sponsors that our disc golf community fully supports this historic effort. There is also an option to register and watch the event for free.

The association estimates that between 5-10,000 registered users from North America, Europe and Asia will click through to the live broadcast each day. These numbers are based on analytics from pdga.com, innovadiscs.com, and usdgc.com, as well as the number of members in the Professional Disc Golf Association and the growing popularity of disc golf around the world.

Disc golf is a sport played much like ball golf, except players throw flying discs into above-ground targets, instead of hitting a ball into a hole in the ground. The Professional Disc Golf Association headquartered in Appling, Georgia, estimates that 2-3 million people play disc golf annually. The PDGA sanctioned nearly 1000 events in 2008, where professional disc golfers shared a total of over $2,000,000 in purse money. Disc golf is played in over 30 nations around the world.

What would you like to see during our Live Internet TV coverage of the USDGC?

We are going to be broadcasting for over 6 hours a day, with few formatting constraints. Is there a story/player/feature that you'd like to see covered during the Broadcast?

Share it with us!

Thanks,
John D.
