The Community of Disc Golfers and About All Things Disc Golf

I am a new player with no past experience. I really started playing in September, and I play everyday. The winter has been rather wet here in France, so I've been using towels - and I chose microfiber towels rather early, which means that I have little experience of regular towels.

Now I noticed that after a round of play, my hands are dried up, which is an issue both in terms of durability of these very-difficult-to-replace items and (more importantly for a truly dedicated discgolfer) in terms of grip. After a whole tournament last week-end, I am only recovering now (Thursday) - and I've been using lots of hand cream.

I was wondering whether this was a normal phenomenon, or something that has to do with microfibers (or is aggravated by them). The point of these extremely efficient fibers is that they lock up moisture, grease, dust etc... instead of shoving the stuff around. I assume this applies to sebum, which is badly needed by the human skin. In other words, if they do it to the disc, they do it to you.

So my question to experienced players who have switched from regular towels to microfibers is: did you notice any difference with respect to hand dryness?

I use a 'sham-wow' or a shammie. These are used for drying cars for the most part.

I have put a grommet in and added a d clip so I can carry on my bag. Drys hands, legs, arms, feet and even discs.

"Its a sham! Its a wow! Its Shamwow!"
Hi, and thanks for the tip! Question is: do you end up with your hand feeling very dry at the end of the day/round/tournament?
I use a microfiber towel and my hands are always fine. The last two weeks i have been playing in the rain and nothing.
I use a microfiber towel and by the end of the round my hands are always dry. I don't mind it in the summer when it is really hot though. I never noticed any difference with a shammie or sham wow.
You may be having a reaction to the material? probably unlikely but possible.....Or if it was new and you didn't wash it before using it...you might be having a reaction to what ever it was treated with. Wash the towel and see what happens.
I used microfiber for a while...I did not like how the microfiber picked up every little thing if it was accidentally dropped on the ground...but to answer your question...no...I have not experienced the dried up hands phenomenon that you experienced. Maybe it’s that French microfiber…hahaha…just kidding.

I switched back to regular hand towels.
I have noticed this phenomenon myself. I just picked up a ShamWow this winter and can totally tell a difference from a "regular" towel. Kinda helpful when wet though. Not sure what the long term effects would be...
Every Winter my hands get dry and crack. Every year I use more moisturizer and it helps. Now I carry it in my car and use it regularly in wet weather or when I notice my hands feeling dry.

I use microfiber towels occasionally, not preferring them due to how they pick up debris. I have never noticed any relationship between using them and my hands getting drier but they might be part of your problem.

With warm weather coming, maybe it is time to try regular towels. I find the cheapest, thinnest ones work best. My sponsor gives me nice embroidered golf towels which I use in the gym and wash regularly for a couple years before they are in prime condition for the course.

Life is too short to spend the time to pick debris out of microfiber towels.
OMG! Mark Ellis posted a reply in my first thread!!! omg!omg!

Your sponsor's towels take 2 years to break in? They must be ESP towels then :oD

Anyway, thanks for the reply, also generally for all the good videos and advice, which I have found most helpful (although as my avatar picture shows, I have yet to fully implement the Putting confidence Program). Oh, and that ace this winter... awesome. I hope Discraft treats you very well, because if my newbie's bag came to be filled with 80% Discraft stuff without even thinking about it, I know it's not the big arms who did it (although I respect and admire them very much).
No but they do steal your soul if you drop it on it
Good one Ben...hahaha...

I also dislike the way microfiber feels on my hands...maybe it's 'cause my hands are as old as I am (hehehe), but a microfiber towels feels like sandpaper (to a very small extent) to me...

I just dug out the one microfiber towel I have, when I unfolded the towel it was like taking velcro apart...sounded like velcro coming apart too (again, to a small extent)...just too dang sticky!
I just use a basic towel.
