Always. Well... not always. If there is an ace pool already I only pay the dollars. I figure I already donated my money to the ace pool, no need to give the person another $5.

Almost a rule of thumb (for most of us).
There always is a 'hush' (crickets chirping) when the disc gets very close to hitting the basket.

Once in a monthly,
there were 3 aces in one round! One right after the other.
Three of us in a group.
I was first, then one right after that (same hole).
The odd man out was whining "I'm out $10!"
Only to hit an ACE 2 holes later!
Needless to say the debts canceled each other out.
True Story.

We play 51 in Clearwater Florida $5 for an Ace $1 for basket or chains and $5 for a Black Ace. For those who do not know what a Black Ace is. You Ace the wrong basket and the thrower pays $5 to everyone on the card. This happens more times than one would think. Once playing I made $10 before I even threw. Back to back Black Aces on the same tee.

I pay the $5 for an ace because they are rare but really I have more respect for a park job deuce. I don't pay for dots ( I guess a double dot on the drive) and don't take money for dots.

Always... even if there is an ace pool. I have paid several aces and dots to people who have never heard of such a thing. Great way to introduce someone to the tradition. "Great shot... here's a buck"

I pay when appropriate, but I don't expect payment. If I hit chains, and don't see any immediate action about paying up, if one of the guys in the group is my friend, I might say "C'mon, pay up!" but I don't take it any further.

Take the high road. Remember, it's only a few bucks!

I agree... I never expect it. I always pay it. I've even put dollars in peoples bags who try to turn it down.
