The Community of Disc Golfers and About All Things Disc Golf

I was thinkin about entering my first tournament and was curious what sort of tips or pointers you all might have for me. It's in Topeka, Kansas so if you have ever played the Capital City Classic, be sure to drop me a line and let me know what to expect. Could use a few pointers on tournament play, "do's and dont's". THANKS!!

Last summer, the originator of this space, Terry Calhoun made a speech at the opening of a local course that he and his wife designed. The day was sunny in Pinconning Michigan at Blizzard Hills. Terry made a statement that has taken my game to a new level. He said that the first and foremost rule of disc golf is " he who has the most fun wins". Aside from that, all I can say to you is that if you concerned with your play, PRACTICE,PRACTICE,PRACTICE,PRACTICE,PRACTICE,PRACTICE,PRACTICE,PRACTICE,PRACTICE and PRACTICE some more. ESPECIALLY WITH THE PUTTER. welcome to DGRUS. My first game ever was played at Swope Park, June of 1978.
1. Familiarize yourself with the PDGA rules (http://www.pdga.com/rules), especially the conduct and courtesy stuff (section 801)
2. Have fun
3. Play your game
4. Have fun
5. Temper your expectations, especially for your own game (i.e. don't expect to win and don't get stressed out if you aren't playing your best)
6. Have fun
7. Take any and all advice and file it away to try later (except for applying rules stuff). Tournaments aren't the place to experiment and try new things. When in doubt, see #3 (and #2, 4, 6, 8, 10).
8. Have fun
9. Don't be afraid to ask questions. 99% of disc golfers are happy to answer them when appropriate (just don't ask while they or others nearby are throwing).
10. Have fun
and don't forget to have fun !

bring stuff like if you were camping too. don't worry though, you'll forget something anyway . good luck!!
I would say besides have fun, Take your time and make smart decisions. Look for all possible routes before throwing. If you don't normally jump putt, DON'T DO IT. Do what you know you can. Leave the trick shots for practice until you know you can nail them.

As a local, welcome and looking forward to have you come to the Capital City Classic!

I agree with JC's comments.
This will be a good tournament to start with. Run by a really good group of guys - LSDiscs!
I would add, you know Kansas weather at this time of year can be iffy, so dress so you will be comfortable and can enjoy the tournament.
See you there.
get there early enough to gently warm up,play catch. play your game. don't talk too much. relax.
Christy, the capital city classic would be a great tournament as a first. I live 20 minutes away from topeka, and play there almost every day. If you end up playing the CCC you will get to play one of topekas top courses although its a temp. if you get on line and go to playdg.com you can look at crestview which is one of the courses you would be playing. big shunga on the other hand is one big park. 18 holes natural teepads and temp baskets. alot of the holes are wide open and long. there is some major elevation change on some of the holes. but most of all you need to remember to have fun and remember its only a game. also kansas weather sucks so i would pack for just about anything. it can be cold and raining one minute and warm and sunny the next. hope to see you out there.

Well, all of these replys are 130% accurate...its all just a game which some will take more serious than others, just play YOUR game and all will work out...it's my first CCC, but I've played the courses multiple times...U will do just fine and you will be in good company
Thanks for all your info! Every little bit counts! I can't wait to get out there and meet some other golfers! WILL SEE YOU THERE!!

~~THANKS~~
