Home Tie Dye?

Howdy community,

I am wanting to tie dye some of my discs--and am looking for advice, techniques, and challenges in the process. I don't simply want to dye the disc one solid color with basic stenciled designs, but rather to dye them with classically psychedelic tie dye patterns...any thoughts?

I tried it for a little while, but it just wasn't worth the time and mess. discgolfreview.com has a section on tye dye. I used Rit powder dye and mixed it with acetone (use gloves and do outside) and hot water. I liked the powder because you could make it grainy and it would make for a more rippled look. For the "spin" or "pin wheel" look. I took a bucket, put a small hole in the bottom (big enough for a drill bit). I then put the bucket onto a few bricks, put the drill with drill bit under it and through the hole. I then taped the heck out of the disc to the drill bit. Tah da..The I put the dye into a 20cc syringe. So I would press the drill trigger and get the disc spinning pretty good. Then with the other hand I would squirt the dye onto the disc and just play around and see what would happen. For just static colors I played around with Elmers glue. Any place the glue was, the disc would not pick up the dye. SOme of my best dye jobs came from that.
That's about it. Pretty limited experience with it. Only did about five or six discs. Have fun!

fantastic...it should work with any array of vinyl cutout stickers from an auto parts store or Home Depot...very nice technique, thanks for sharing...

you can get some more abstract designs using plain old white glue as your stencil. let it dry and then throw some dye over it.

i didn't have any trouble. i washed the dye off with cold water as is my standard practice, then after about 30 seconds of that i turned on the hot and washed the glue off with warm/hot water. i used this on both star and champion plastic with non-toxic-safe-for-a-toddler-to-eat Elmer's style glue.

Someone posted a video on DGCR and they were using the liquid RIT 70/30 with clear dish soap. They made a turn table out of an old box fan and squirted the dye on the spinning disc using a ketchup, mustard, bbq style squeeze bottle. He only let it spin a couple seconds each application or squirt if you will. Hope this helps. It's the best I can do as I haven't tried it yet.
