Back in the day we had Whamos and a park down the street. Used to cut the college classes and head out in the sun to our object course. Fence posts, trees, manhole covers, and a sundial.
Last March my brother and brother-in-law were both unemployed and started playing for something to do during the day. They asked if I wanted to play one day and I've been hooked ever since.
How? With a single Gateway Sabre in 1999 at White Birch Park--Hazelwood, Missouri.

Why? I was a poor college student who could not afford to play real golf--I needed a fix to make 'par'.
Was that back when Gateway was giving away discs for free? I got a couple of those! May have been before '99 though.
I was living in St. Louis--and they pretty much controlled the local market share...I don't think it was free though...
A friend of mine from Barry's neck of the woods took me out to a course and I've been going every since.
I was out playing basketball one day back in 85 and I saw a couple of guys playing disc golf. I asked them what they were doing and they kindly explained the game and told me of an upcoming weekend tournament. I joined the tourny but didn't realize that I needed special discs, so I played with a wham-o on a very windy day. The guys were great and I had a blast despite having an astronomical score. Needless to say I was buying a disc later that week and I was at that course as often as could get out. The course was the old Papago which was taken down within the year and I switched to playing Vista del Camino.

It was another way to enjoy throwing a Frisbee.
I worked with a guy who played, and he dragged me and the kids we worked with along to the local course. He handed me a champion orc and briefly went over the rules. That's the short story on my addiction.

I was an ultimate player before I started golfing, so I've always loved to huck plastic anyway, DG gives me a way to play if I don't have a field and enough people for teams.
started playin with my friends in highschool cuz it was something competitive to do outside after takin some bong rips. played at the course right up against fairview high in easy breezy beautiful boulder, co. where the flatirons span the horizon and the sun is always shining.
still play for the same reason (except i'm in madison, wi), but now i have a set of discs and i like how similar it is to ball golf, which is my first and real love. discin is a nice time to have fun outside of the competition of golf and baseball (i play both in college now) but i can still feel the thrill of scoring well and beating my buddies ;)
here's to bein outside and enjoying life. cheers!
All I I'll say is this: good friends, the great outdoors, and an (affordable) escape from graduate school.
