The Community of Disc Golfers and About All Things Disc Golf

Hey, out of all the things I have been working on in my months at this new game, the hardest thing for me has got to be getting a good spin. Any seasoned pros care to step up to the plate with their tips? Appreciated.

I don't qualify as a seasoned pro by any means, but this is something I've been working on for a little over a year. A couple things working for me:

1. Play ultimate! You have to throw those giant discs (by comparison) with lots of spin to balance the armspeed. If you can learn to get a big pull with an ultimate disc going straight, then you are throwing with good spin to arm speed ratio. For a while you'll probably torque everything to the ground right (if you're right handed).

2. Do you use a power grip? If not, you should develop it.

3. Do you pull through in a straight line? Keep that disc close to the body.

4. Follow through strong. Be accelerating through the rip. I think sometimes I throw with too much emphasis on arm speed strength. When I do that, the timing of my throw is off because I've expended that burst of power BEFORE the rip. You want to explode THROUGH the rip.

5. Practice with changing timing of power, length of reach back, grips and really pay attention to what feels right. I wish I could be more descriptive than that. Throwing putters and rocs is a great way to tell if you're doing it well. You won't get any of the flutter and a straight, ropelike flight will tell you you're on the right track.

I hope some of those points help you. Maybe you knew all of that already, but I thought I'd take a shot at helping you out. These things have helped me.
thank you very much, i throw with a lot of those techniques. Right now I am working on my timing especially, i seem to get out in front of the disc and my release is limp because the power came and went early. Just bought a Buzzz today, and I am going to really practice getting control with that disc because i know that it will fly any line it is put on. I have never thrown an ultimate disc though, maybe i should try to play with some locals at the park. Appreciate the tips amigo!
Let your wrist act as a spring or pendulum. Dont make it curl, it will swing back on the joint and snap forward all on its own! Laws of physics.
