lets hear from any old timers.

not that I feel I'm in that group, but playing since '88 I remember disc golf differently back then.

I remember my first tournaments, I guess they were really mini's, but to me they were tournaments.

only cost a few bucks, and when you won you got plastic, from some dudes trunk.

and it was always cool because there were no disc golf stores that I knew of in the area, so all the plastic seemed new and amazing.


everyone hung around to see who won. and congratulated the winners. there would be a CTP if any ties.





I'd like to hear from the old timers about any fond memories about the way it was "back then " from their perspective.

man remember when if you hit a tree on your drive with a really good rip, you ended up with several pieces of plastic instead of one, and you got to throw from the biggest chunck that was left
although truth be told, I only ever broke three disc, two of which were Cyclones, one almost straight in half, the other in about five pieces, the third was a Viper, although it was more of a crack that ran almost all the way across the disc, lol

and almost all of your discs had some kind of taco affect to them

I still remember the first time I was invited out to play, and that by coincidence was 1988 as well, I said "frisbee golf?, WTF, that sounds gay as hell" but I went and I've been going ever since, but now I call Disc Golf instead

somewhere along the line, thanks to Whamo, we lost the ability to call it Frisbee Golf, and they lost a ton of sales I think

the other thing I remember is the whole Dallas/Ft Worth area only had like four courses, Veterans in Arlington, Fritz in Irving, Jimmy Porter in Carrollton and the Dallas course across from Lake Highlands H.S. which has been moved to BB Owens now, and maybe Greenbelt in Carrollton, don't remember if that was before or right after, oh my memory thing again, I forget the others, now where did I put my keys, I need to go get a round in....

hey now,early target player from the 60's thru present day disc golf.Wham-o frisbee always in our hands,later in the car trunk with all the rest of sporting equipment ready for a game.First played course was in Va.Bch area-Bayshore-'77-79.Always played rec.Ultimate play was at it's infancy as well in the 60's,we didn't have a name for the game.Locals in Jersey,we played similar to football"Frisball".Street,field or local hs football field,none of the fields were "fenced" to restrict play. I have an old DGA brochure from the late 1970s that features the VA Beach course, and has a pic of the course sign in it. It also has a picture of PDGA # -1 putting with what looks like a lid. You are a real old timer (or mini collector) if you know who PDGA minus 1 is. Any takers?

I remember those Masters dudes when I started playing...the old dudes that putted with lids. Those were some old dudes, they were in their mid to late 30's! Now that I'm in my 40's and the young guys go "what is that?" when I pull a grid-stamped Aviar out of my bag, I have a new-found respect for those old dudes in their late 30's.

A lot of stuff was the same, just smaller. You didn't have a lot of events using multiple courses on the same day because you had enough space for everybody on one course. Events went quicker because the courses were shorter and there seemed to be less OB and things like that. Water and pavement were the only things I ever heard called OB until USDGC with the Clown's Mouth and the yellow rope, now everywhere I go there is some weird OB ruling. Not that it is bad or anything, making things harder can be good. It is different. We also seem to spend more time looking for lost discs these days. It's a lot easier to loose something you throw 350' with very little accuracy as opposed to something you throw 250' with decent accuracy. It is fun to throw those extra 100', though!

Because stuff was smaller, things felt a little different. We used to have a Club of 100 guys and you knew 90 of them by name and the same 30 of you showed up at every event with a few add-ons. Now you have 250 guys in a club and you don't know half of them. You will get 80 guys at an event and you might still know 30 of them, but the 50 guys you don't know wandering around can make things seem less...well, less something. Close knit? I'm not sure. But more people are playing and that is good. It's just different.

The baskets didn't used to have those damn yellow bands that I fixate on and end up drilling with my putts. I hate the yellow bands. I'll take the good old gouge in my putter from hitting the number plate any day. Come to think of it, maybe the yellow band doesn't have anything to do with it...

hey now,no unfortunately.We left Jersey in '76,moved to Va.Bch area,found the course at Bayside(Bayshore)in'77-79.Lived approx. 10 miles from Rutgers growing up in Jersey.Small town Dunellen.Used to hunt,walk,play all around that Piscataway area when woods were still more prevelent then houses.I'll have to dig deeper into the attic mind memeory for closer name.Peace

Due to a series of unfortunate incidents that happened in 1990, I have fewer memories than your average drug-addled survivor of the 70s. However, I remember bits and pieces of my first tournament. It was at Addison Oaks.

At my first tournament they ran mixed division foursomes for the first round. There was this pro named Gunars Nollendorfs and three bottom feeding amateurs in my group. This was the year that Am 3 was a new thing so I'm guessing 1991? Gunars laid down the law before we began: where we we're to stand when he was throwing, when we were allowed to speak, how we were to keep score. He was very intimidating. He was playing for money and this was serious.

I played very well. I finished second or third in Am 3. Gayle Vaughn saw me after the awards and said, "What'd you get? What'd you get?" I said, "This really nice trophy." He said, "How much is in the envelope?" I was not fully aware that I had an envelope. They must have handed it to me when they handed me my trophy. Gayle opened the envelope and explained funny money to me. My world changed.
