Places that you wish had a DG course

On New Years Day, I took my wife and daughter on a little day trip outside of Orlando to Lake Wales, FL to see the historic Bok Tower Gardens.   The place was absolutely gorgeous.  The gardens are top notch and the entire property is elevated on a hill.  In fact, Lake Wales in general is nothing but hills.  The property is riddled with little ponds tucked away in perfectly maintained gardens..  majestic oaks, fairways of all flavors, wooded, open and elevation galore (for Florida at least).    

 

The ENTIRE time I was there I kept spotting the perfect basket locations and tee spots.  I would joke with my wife around every corner that I wanted to go back to my car and grab my discs.   Finally she got annoyed and asked me, "is that ALL you think about!?"  and I simply shrugged my shoulders and sighed, "well, in a place like this?  how can I think of anything else?"  lol

 

I know it would probably never happen in a million years, but Bok Tower Gardens could host one of the neatest DG courses in Florida if allowed; hence the idea for this discussion.

 

I know I'm not alone here.   How many of you have gone to a place that would likely never install a course but you can't help but daydream about teeing off and hearing chains the entire time you are there?

Indianapolis Motor Speedway's infield. The four ball golf holes would make a really sweet disc golf course. Big lake, nice elevation changes, wooded holes, open holes, rough, all different kinds of trees and beautifully manicured.

I've never been up that way but I just checked it out on google earth and it looks sweet!

I'm in Sarasota and have been to Bok Tower Gardens once. I KNOW EXACTLY what you mean. That place would rock. I agree that it would never happen in a Million years. St. Mary's College of Maryland where I graduated in 1993 needs to install real baskets after their decades long tradition of object DG.. ( maybe they have, I haven't been there in over 11 years). The whole length of Sligo creek Park in Montgomery county Maryland would make a great all day mega course as well would parts of in Rock Creek Park in Washington D.C.  Back to Florida, Oscar Scherer park in Osprey and Urfer Family park in Sarasota would be  good ones, and finally, the park surrounding the lighthouse in St. Augustine.

I used to work for the Carolina Panthers so I got to see more of the stadium then most of the public.  It would be awesome to have a course at a NFL stadium.  There are long wide hallways that go left or right, Offices upstairs,  huge locker rooms, big cafeteria big equipment rooms, a lot of huge open areas and tight spots as well, cheerleaders,  Not to mention how awesome would it be to throw from the stands behind one end zone mando through both uprights to the stands behind the other end zone.  Or Launching one out of the tunnel to a basket in the middle of the field.

Ran an event in 2000 around the Daytona Beach Municipal Stadium (with permission from the City of Daytona Beach). Had a ctp from on top of the press box down to the 50 yard line. Used parking lanes for 2 holes (there was a strip of grass between each lane approximately 300 feet long). There was retention ponds, woods, open areas a big mound of dirt. A fun course. Shame could not have been permanent. But grateful for the opportunity to use such a place.

Speaking of disc golf road trips.. the last one we were on we stopped at a highway rest stop. While sitting on nice benches & looking at the surrounding green area we got a couple discs out of the car & threw a few imaginary holes. If only we would've had a practice basket...

Some of these rest stops are pretty elaborate with extensive landscaping, etc. (especially the ones coming into or going out of  a new state). They have bathrooms, water & snacks. It's like it's already set up for Disc Golf!

We had to ask ourselves, what if every rest stop had a couple baskets set in the ground? Wouldn't that be cool?
