Ok, newbie here, took up the game last November and played all winter. just spent 2 days in the rain on a DG outing to Des Moines! Nuts about the game. Anyway, have a course in Kansas City, Legacy Park, that has a 175 ft hole. It has very dense foilage down the right, a large tree/bush in the middle so you really have to play right to left and with a perfect shot can get inside 20 feet. Very challenging, short hole. 2 is a great score.

So here's the argument, my buddy feels its unfair because its only 175 ft yet there is no chance for an ace. he feels that if its that short you ought to have a chance for an ace. I disagree and think that just because its short doesnt mean you have to have a shot at an ace. it's a tough three, just part of the game. part of the problem i think lies in the fact that the trees surrounding the hole are not groomed at all and there are several locust trees (very nasty thorns).

So, should a hole, just because its short mean you should have to have a shot at an ace?

sorry for being so long-winded!

Thanks

Eddie

no. its all about the scoring differential and dispersion of the scores. if it is possible for a very well executed tee shot to get you a 2 and a poor tee shot to get you a 4 or more thats what matters, execution Vs reward. its nice if a hole is ace-able but definitely not necessary no matter the length. ace-able holes are not really needed at all, except to pad our egos, as far as the actual game goes.

anyone with knowledge of course design will agree, but ace run holes are fun to shoot.

but almost all aces need some degree of luck to go in anyway, so you could make an argument that they actually take away from the true nature of the game. back in the day playing with super class discs they were as unlikely as the ball golf hole in one.
I wish! IMO that's why every thing is a par 3 for the most part. I mean heck, There are some par 3's out there were I'm happy with a 4 ( ya know, those 800 ft. par 3's). Also how does your buddy know it's impossible? I would bet somebody has aced that hole. Just like I know some of the people I play with have birdied that 800 ft. par 3. Gosh I hate them lol!!
no every short hole shouldn't have a clear shot for a ace, and as rescue said im sure someone out there has aced it, but it's a matter of luck pretty much on any ace.
if every shot had an easy shot to the pin...then why play the game? seems kind of boring to me.
Tell him life isn't supposed to be easy, and neither is disc golf. Plus as a few others have said I bet someone has aced it. If you want everything in this sport to be so easy that you can get a 1 on a hole than you are in the wrong sport. There are 2 holes at Idlewild in Kentucky that are less than 200ft. and are very hard 3's. Yes it is aceable but it would be the luck of the Irish!!! I hear the exact same gripe all the time out of people and it is generally from someone who doesn't think they need to put in time to learn the game. They want to play for a year and be considered Pro.
Better yet ask him if you can Ace every short hole in Ball Golf? This sport is modeled after Ball Golf.
I personally wouldn't like it if you could ace every short hole. A good case and point was this years worlds in Kansas City. I did my home work before I left and got course maps of all the courses I was to play. When I came across the Down Under course, on paper I was like yeah I can make up a bunch of strokes here with these short, short holes. WRONG! Although most of the holes were short they weren't as easy as I thought they were going to be. It was a bunch of fun but not a bunch of aces. However, there was one guy who happened to hit two aces and another who hit one. So out of a field of 69 players, playing two rounds there were only three aces. That is 2484 drives and only three aces. Gotta love it! Keep throwing!
Eddie I've played that hole. Not every should have a shot at an ace. It's golf not an ace race! Great hole and I really like that course!
Then make up a 19th hole for your buddy. Set down a mini about 20 feet away from the practice basket and call it the 19th hole. Your buddy can spend an hour practicing the hole and rack up a couple hundred aces.

What does the 19th hole prove? That easy aces are not worth much.

I have a friend who used to go to a short easy hole on a course and spend the afternoon emptying his bag time after time after time after time. Yep he cashed some aces.

Making a hole easier does not automatically make it better. Making a hole much harder does not automatically make it better either. Every hole should have a fairway which rewards good drives and punishes poor drives. Whether a good score for a hole is a 2 or a 6 does not matter. Whether a hole is aceable or not does not matter to me, at all. As Robey the one mentioned, scoring variance usually makes for a good hole.
No, not at all...that's the beauty of this game....variety......a good shot gets you a 3...a great shot gets you a 2....a poor shot...well the sky's the limit.
Thanks for the comments everyone! That's part of the fun of the game! Now I have to decide if I keep searching for a job or just go play another round! lol

btw-the neon disc king baskets Down under at Rosedale rock!
thanks.
Tell ur buddy to go play Blue valley!he probably wont say another word about the short hole.
