The Community of Disc Golfers and About All Things Disc Golf

Hi everyone.  Let me start this off by saying this:  I hate winter golf.  I know you Michigan guys are calling me all sorts of diminutive explicatives under your breath right now, but I've decided I don't care.  I've done all the things you can to do make a round tolerable in winter (besides hot cocoa in one of those beer-drinking helmets that have a straw to your mouth (this may be the key).  I don't like winter golf.

That said, I also don't like letting my putting atrophy over the long Wisconsin winter, so here my solution:

Host a (indoor) putting contest on DGRUS. If you don't have an indoor basket with 20 feet of space...feel free go outside (we might even give you a bonus putt...okay, no we won't).  All those in Florida and Cali are exempt from this contest.  Okay, you're not, but you have no excuse for your sub-par putting.  :-)

Here are the simple rules.

1...Throw 50 20' putts in one day and record your makes.  It doesn't have to be all at once, it can be broken up.  If you happen to make all 50, then keep going to see how long a streak you can get.

2...Once you start your set officially (and just say in your mind, 'okay, now I'm starting' don't start after you've made ten in a row while warming up) you cannot start over, no matter how dismal you're doing.  Stick to it.  It's what you'd have to do in a round...let's make it count.

3...Come to this thread and post how many you hit of 50 from the 20' range.

4...You can only do one set a day.  (you can practice all you like of course) So if you don't like your score, you cannot start over.  You're on your considerable honor as a disc golfer.

5...We'll have daily winners, weekly winners, and the coveted "Best Session of the 09-10 Winter Season."  The contest will run until April 1, 2010 (last day to putt will be March 31).

That's it.  I don't have any prizes for this...just something to keep us motivated to practice and to create the pressure of competition in the off-season.

Oh lastly:  are there any vendors out there that would be willing to sponsor such a contest?  I know many of you frequent this forum.  Even a very small weekly prize (like a company mini) to the best score of the week would go a long way in creating a good name on the forum I'm sure.

Again, please be honest about your scores, it does no one (including yourself) a favor if you cheat.  You all know the adage.

Let the games begin!

You left out Hawaii ,ha.Rain and a cool 40-50 degree weather in Florida dipping into the 30's in the evening. This is our winter, move to take advantage of temps for disc golf.Perhaps we should putt with our opposite throwing hand and close one eye or take our glasses off if one needs to see.Better yet, opposite throwing hand every other day;lefty-righty;righty-lefty.
ok.. too much work for me. Because I do not have a basket, I have recently put up a laundry basket about 30 feet away and putting into that. I have been getting better because instead of just tossing it in that direction like I do when I play on the course (throw it at the chains thinking the chains will take care of putting it in the basket for me), I have to give it a decent amount of loft to drop in, but not too much to hit my ceiling, or the door frame I have to throw through. I've changed my putting style, but it has payed off so far.
Hey all, I've amended the contest to make it 50 putts instead of 100. I didn't want all of your putting practice to be dominated by the contest and I thought it would make it more accessible for people to participate.
Hey Brandon. So the weather is a cool 53,winds blowing NW 12mph.Just some sarcastic Floida humor earlier.
Day 1;2/13/10: 34 putts out of 50. Post again tomorrow, hit chains.
Well I am in South Dakota. on the 100 I hit 71% grrr. At the 50 putt mark, I was 75%. I was 20' 2"
Sounds like a great way to have a killer season this spring/summer! Its much easier for me to quickly improve my drives than it is to improve my putting. And we all know what makes a dominant player....nut on consistant putting!...Ok the 500 feet off the tee dont hurt!
2/13/2010... I hit 37 of 50 today after sinking the first 12 in a row. I think fatigue is a major issue with my putting style. It looks like with 4 hours left to go Charles Isaac is leading today. Look above Charles, I changed it to 50 putts instead of 100. So your first set was 38/50 or 39/50? Either way you're in the lead. :-)
2-15-2010...Hit 39/50 for 78% (slightly better than before). The crazy thing is, I tried lefty and hit 30/50...not too bad for off handed. I also have been trying the push putt technique as taught be Dave Feldberg. Well, that 30/50 lefty was with that technique as I don't have anything established left handed yet. I can't hit 30/50 with my right hand using the same technique. It's really strange. I guess it goes to show that Dave is right about my right hand when he says, "You got habits-- you got bad habits." Maybe I'll teach my left hand "good habits" and use my right hand when I want to spin putt. I don't know.
I hit only 37/50 (74%) today from 20'. I did seem to perform a bit better in the time I spent putting before I began counting, but it wasn't significant enough to deter my disappointment in today's practice. I'm not sure what my problem was, but I felt terribly inconsistent--even erratic at times. I'd like to say I could blame it on thinking too much about my putting style, as the push vs. spin putt issue Brandon was talking about has been on my mind lately, but I didn't let thoughts about form break my so-called 'concentration'. Despite clearing my head from the debate about putting form, I still wasn't able to concentrate on each shot very well.

Anyway, in thinking about the push/spin putt, I did some digging online and I came across a cool site with some hard-to-find instructional videos. In addition to the two inserted to the page as 'widgets', you will also find a link at the top to Dave Feldberg's putting clinic. Enjoy: http://thedridge.com/disc_golf.html
2/15/10 - I got to 30 out of 40 and got too pissed to finish. I'm missing low and right. Maybe tomorrow I'll make it to 50.
2/14/2010: lefty putt ...30>50.
2/15/2010:39>50 right putt
weather was cool,breezy nw winds,temp 58 around 5:30 pm
backyard putting.I've marked off 3 20 ft ranges to break it up;2@ 17 putts,3rd@16 putts. The 16 throws are with the wind, other 2 17's are side putts encountering winds or are you just at one stationary putt tee.later
Just do it man! I wanted to start over so badly the day before and if you end up posting a bad score now, it'll be encouraging as you start to have better days (nowhere to go but up!).
