putting styles pros/cons???

i am a relative rookie... my friends sucked me in to disc golf at the beginning of last season and i've been addicted ever since... due to lots of coaching from my friends, i've progressed pretty quickly, but my biggest problem right now is putting... i have a very straight ahead putting style, and by that i mean i putt in a straight line and right at the chains... the problem i have with this approach is that with the putters i use, my range is limited... i have tried numerous putters and am currently using a kc pro aviar ( which still doesn't help my range ).... i am waiting for my new R-Pro Dart to arrive in the mail, as from what i've read it should fit my game well... any advice on what to putt with for that straight shot putting style, or should i be changing the way that i'm putting? any helpful advice would be greatly appreciated!

It sounds like you need a mid range'ish type disc to go straight, farther & be able to reach the chains. Try an XD. Its pretty flat & goes straight, long if you push hard enough. P.S. good luck keeping it in the basket with this style. I prefer a 'pitch' or drop in style so I don't risk the big blow-bye (& subsequent come-backer)

Ive got the same problem, when your shooting in range do you have a fan grip like I do? When Im out far enough I switch to the power grip and put a little more swing into it, maybe try that.

How many feet are you talking about, in regard to to your "range"? Because I can't see were a putter change would make a diff. If mean you want a putter that doesn't fade as much. I would say try these.... Aviar (beadless), APX, Reef, Warlock, Omega, just to name a few. Also have you tried the straddle putting technique? Problem with it. It's not what I would call a good tech. for long range putting, but I find it helpfull when my timing is off and I'm just not "feeling" it that day.

basically anything inside 30 ft is the range i'm looking for... i have a heavy champion coyote for anything approach-wise outside of that... i just want to be consistent from closer range and looking for a reason not to change my putting style, but that may be the route to go...

thanks for the advice... i read up on the XD and it looks like it may just be the disc i'm looking for... ordered one in white 175 a moment ago...

Jeez I don't know man. It seems if you are talking inside 30' It sounds more like a technique problem. Because I would consider myself a finess putter. What I mean by that. I don't really put much power behind my putts. I just can't see were changing putters would impact your game that much at such a close range. Check your weight tranfer and arm speed. I am by now means a putting guru, but I do make a pretty high % of my putts. Also, when you order your putter/putters. Buy a few of them (I always buy four) and make sure they are about the same grams. Like today. I was at the practice basket and this guy had six diff. putters and he couldn't understand way he was all over the place. I feel you just can't build up a feel for your putting with diff putters. There is this site called discgolfreviews. They have some good articles and some video's as well as a ton of reviews on discs. Youtube also has some good video's that might help.

I agree with Rescue. It aint the disc its the technique. The only things that matter about your putter choice is that it feels good to you and you have confidence in it.

Throwing a straight putt at the center of the chains is great, if you can do it. But no single putting style works for every putt because you need to putt over, under or around obstacles sometimes. And the various baskets you putt at have no respect for any putting style: they kick out apparently good putts at will.

The best solution for putting woes is practice.

I agree to agree with the others here. Inside 10 meters you're technique will get you to the chains. The suggestion for the XD was just to try something different. You never know...
And do get more than one disc if you like the first one & practice, practice, etc. Fan out the fingers under the disc & flatten the throw. Spring (explode) the disc off your fingers with thumb pointing up at finish. Bam!

Without actually seeing you putt...it's hard to give advice. So here's some general advice. Make sure your balance is good. Balance is a key to consistant putting...don't lean to far forward. It sounds like your firing them in from your lower mid section or belt line....using mostly wrist snap and arm motion. Spread your feet, bend at the knees...start the disc out lower, use the momentum from slightly springing up from a slight crouching stance...use your legs more. (crouching golfer...hidden putter)



Focus on the sweet spot....do not look away or blink...Learn the effects of wind and putting, headwind will lift a disc...tail will drop it...visualize the flight path and impact with the chains. One shot..One Kill!!!


Grip it well..know the disc is in your hand....avoid the Cindy Flopper!!! If your nose is dropping, move your thumb around on the flight plate to adjust for that....forward or back from the edge.


Your routine should always be the same...so putt for real like you practice putting.


Lastly....never use a Rattler!!!! They bite!!! j/k lol!!!

if your having trouble getting the disc to the basket a quick and simple fix would be to use a lighter putter, they like to stay in the air. Down side is if there is any type of wind you may run into some control issues.
