Removing flash from a disc?

i hear people doing this with a razor blade or sand paper what is this?

Gotta be real careful but there is a method to it. Flashing is sometimes sharp on discs. The flashing is the excess plastic from where the mold pieces fit together when making the disc.

I alway just Rub the disc on the cement tee pads a couple times and it takes the sharp edges off of the throwing rim.

Be careful doing this as you can massively alter the flight of the disc to the point it isn't even remotely close to the disc you bought.

It's where the plastic on the edge of the disc is not smooth. This can make a sharp edge that cuts in to your hand. I've only has it bad on a few disc, I just roll the disc over a hard surface a few times to mash it down.

I witnessed a guy doing this during a round last week. He was vigorously rubbing the disc flat on the tee pad "to make it more under-stable" We then started talking about the PDGA rule against making post production alterations which modify the characteristics of a disc. He was definitely doing this and if someone got a close look at his disc it would be fairly obvious. so in reply to the discussions title:

It is against PDGA rules if you plan to use the disc in a tournament and you have removed enough material to alter the discs original flight.

 

C. Players may not make post-production
modification of discs which alter their original
flight characteristics. This rule does not
forbid inevitable wear and tear from usage
during play or the moderate sanding of discs
to smooth molding imperfections or scrape
marks. Discs excessively sanded or painted
with a material of detectable thickness are
illegal. See sections 802.01 D, E and F.

short of doing it in front of your competitors during a PDGA tournament you shouldn't really worry abpout anyone calling you out. even if they did i find it hard to believe that any TD would uphold a group trying to stroke a player for it. other then that there is no way to prove it did not occur through normal wear which is completely legal.

 

I use a razor blade and a loving touch.

 

Sean I have never had it change the flight of a disc and could not imagine how much you would have to cut off to "massively alter the flight".
