I have modified a rake that brings in discs like crazy. I designed it to get my plastic, but it dosen't know the difference. Now, I have a new responsibility and am wondering the time frame to wait for the owner to return my call. Is a week or a month good? Some of the plastic has been under h2o for years and my be worth nothing. Any guidance appreciated.

Man, you are to be commended for making the good-faith effort to return lost discs. Too many people just stuff them in their bag with a "who cares" attitude that does nothing for their karma.

Anyway, if you call someone and they don't get back to you in a week, then I'd say that's enough time. I know if it was me, I'd be on the horn in a split flash! In fact, howzabout I tell you where I've lost my plastic so you can go fishing for it ;-)
At a couple of tournaments this year, Sheila and I tried to work out a system where we had two plastic boxes. In one, we would collect found discs and note on a sticker when they were found. Then we would do what was possible to notify the owner. But if we did not hear back in (I think 2 months?) we would put them in the other box, which was labeled: "Take a disc, Leave a disc," and anyone who wanted or needed a disc could take one.

It seemed to have good potential, but we have been too busy to do much more with it.
dude- I know how you feel-I have a disc that I've had for over a year and cant bear to throw it/sell it/get rid of it-just feels wrong cause its an ace disc........

TONY NAGURSKI I HAVE YOUR ACE MONSTER FROM HOLE 7 BREWER PARK GRAND RAPIDS/BYRON CENTER MICHIGAN!!!!!!!!!
I have found one disc but it had no name or number on it :(

I want to see a picture of this "modified" rake
I just call and call and call.. after the 3rd or 5th call from the number on the back (probably like a month) I'll put them in my trunk. Every now and then I'll take someone to the course who hasn't played before and give them one of the unclaimed discs. Gives them something to use until they can research and invest into their own discs. I hope they pay it forward. In my opinion..I think it's a good gesture.

I like Terry's idea about the "Take a Disc, Leave a Disc" idea.
The rake works great in the muck. If it hits a rock, I lose the payload. As of now the prototype is confidential, no pics;)
I do like Terry's idea. Right now I have the ones spoken for in the cab of my truck, the ones I've called in one stack, and the ones I got today are soaking so I can clean the duck poo off 'em. If it was just one or two, I'd call and call, but I pulled in over 40. One call, I'll leave my name and #, what disc I found and what DGC. That should be enough right?
yeah... that should be enough information. I'll usually say what hole I found it on as well.
We do this at the store, with help from some local DG's. people have a month to pick up their plastic, people who do pick up we have a donation jar, for the people that get in our muck of a pond. when no one collects them i donate them to the local boy and girls scouts plus we are in a busy plaza so I'm always giving people their first disc...Funny thing is a customer of mine was at "play it again" and seen one of my discs with the phone number and Just Disc Golf Please Call on it and told the guy the usual deal people usually like being called and sometimes offer a reward and the guy didn't care...then another customer come in and said he seen the disc up there lol then finally another customer just bought the disc back for me for a Christmas gift lol I never get a call on my plastic...
GOOOOO PRESTO! Oooooo and since the rake is TOP SECRET your gonna have to pay me hush money to keep it quiet. I think Mike is right, you make 4 or so calls wait a month and then poof its yours, like we both know most of that plastic has been in there for years. By the way did you find a yellow double stamp wraith with Coasties name on it???? Good job man, I knew you would rebuild this rake! I personally think you have money maker there!
if ur not gonna tell us about this "rake" then at least sell it!! haha
I have never been to a water course (well other than the Oroville course that is right next to the feather river)
If I find a Disc where I'm playing , I turn it in to the Pro shop area of that course. I have mailed discs to players even !!!!

Make sure a name , phone # , or PDGA # is on it.
Yea thats what happens at the course that does have a 'pro shop" but two of our courses have no shop or honor boxes(im working on the honor boxes), and to boot this lake is in the middle of a public park that a temp course gets set up on once a year.
