The Community of Disc Golfers and About All Things Disc Golf

What ever happened to him? Is he still involved in discgolf?  For those who dont know about Sam Ferrans, this the only information I was able to find.I searched him on the PDGA site and he wasnt listed. If you know anything about him and would like to share it would be appreciated.

  • Sam Ferrans exploded onto the disc golf scene in 1984 when at the tender age of 16 he became the youngest player to ever win a PDGA World Championship
  • 1988 sets new world distance record with an INNOVA Phenix golf disc.

I believe he runs the hero disc site and is heavily involved with the Japan Open.
My very first round of tournament golf was on a card with Ferrans. I was new to the sport and a local I knew came up to me after holes were assigned and asked if I knew who Sam Ferrans was, I said no and he told me, "you will after today".
It was the first time I saw what a top pro can do with a disc. Sam won that weekend, that was in 1987 at the old Banklick course, now moved down the road and called Lincoln Ridge.
Pretty sure he was on the dating game at one time. ask him about it, he'll deny it, but its true, I know, I saw the episode.

I got to see him play in Tulsa in 85.
Sam is still an active PDGA member #2872. He is also in the PDGA Hall of Fame. He currently works for INNOVA in Rancho Cucamonga and Hero Disc USA. Sam also does the fund raising and coordinates the international competitors for the Japan Open. He still holds the record for the youngest PDGA World Champion in the Open Division.

A Google search will turn up lots of photos and some video clips. Here is Sam (in middle) from Japan Open 2008:

Ask him to tell you the story of the roller distance record competition. Great story by a great guy.
Since he's not on the forum, care to share the story? Please? :-)
OK. My brief version won't do justice, but the highlights are that at the Big D at the salt flats in the California desert 4-5 years ago, he threw a roller that just wouldn't quit. It was rolling towards his wife's car WAY out there and they were yelling at her to move the car, but she did't hear and it hit the car. She got mad at all the yelling and moved it. He threw an AVIAR for cripes sakes and said the side wind just kept it up and it went 1000 meters!!!! A kilometer!!! The car shot apparently would have been that long too! He also said his wife didn't accompany him to too many events after that! She was witness to history though.
I saw Sam about a week ago at Innova while picking up a custom disc order.
A World Champ at 16 years of age! I would imagine that record will certainly stay in the books.
Thanks to everyone who responded to my post. I was looking up some history on DG and can across his name. I wanted more information to be satisfied. Thanks again I hope one day Ill be able to meet him and ask the roller story.
I met with Sammy over this past summer here in Colorado - Yes he is working with Hero and is becoming more and more involved with the Ashley Whippet Series events...
Sam's a real good guy. He told me a story on himself.
He was attending a big tournament (Worlds ?) and a kid comes up to him and asks " Didn't you used to be somebody ? "
Sam laughs and laughs at that one !
