Tee pad Design

Has anyone seen or made tee pads that are concrete on the last 2-3 feet (for the pivot and planting) but natural up to the concrete. My Idea was to have the edge of the pad fade right into the lawn? have you seen or played on such pads. will it work?

This sounds like a great idea but i think that over time edges would begin to wear out and the pad would have lips showing and cause you to trip when throwing. I have never seen this but course around here when it gets wet the area around the tee pad usually suffers.

Wouldn't this create a tactile issue as well? Your feet would be aware of the change in surfaces and it might be distracting to your drive.

good points what if gravel was used to keep conditions around box solid?

possibly with gravel, but overall not a great idea. Staying with a single material (either concrete, grass, gravel, rubber or dirt) will always be best. Keep in mind how the drainage and erosion will effect the pad also.

This would not be very cost effective because you would need to keep adding gravel offten depending on where the course is located and the weather.

worst tee set up ever. At a course here in Maine a few of the holes have this set up, The ground before the concrete gets eatin away very fast and causes a inconsistent run up for the player, In my eyes stick to one or the other all natural or all concrete. or mix it from hole to hole, but please just dont do both on the same tee.

Here are some pics of the recently added tee pads at our home course at Patoka, IN. We added on 9 holes to the existing 9 and put in new concrete tee pads and signs. These are the best pads I've thrown on!!! 4X4's encasing the concrete tee pad.
I agree with the rest of the posts on this topic. I'm a construction worker, and concrete is a huge part of my job. The dirt around the pad will most likely erode leaving a NASTY above ground pad with broken and jagged edges. Good idea, just not feasible. Maybe these pics will give you an idea for a good pad.

I'd rather throw on just a dirt pad. Transitioning to the concrete from the dirt would really screw with my head. We played a safari round where we teed sideways off an existing pad and I hated that. Everyone was hesitant.

the concrete where it has been thinned down will crack and break. Buy doing this you are actually making a weak spot in the concrete and basically encouraging the crack.
