The Community of Disc Golfers and About All Things Disc Golf

A quick disclaimer - I'm still new and poor, so I can't just buy new discs on a whim.

That being said, I have a SSS Wizard and an Innova Birdie to use as putters.  While I can certainly see why the Wiz is more popular than the Bird, I find myself putting with the Birdie because it's not only less stable but much harder, which I prefer.

I would really like to hear people's thoughts on the Birdie.  Other putter advice is fine (and expected), but if the Birdie will play, it's simply a matter of getting another one instead of two Magics (my current desire).

Though I think the rhyno has a great feel, it's overstable. Same with the banger. Not that they are bad, just that the wizard is a more popular choice for slightly overstable. So if your tight on cash, trying a less stable alternative may be a better choice. I love magnets:)
overstable: zone, pig, rhyno
slightly overstable: challenger, focus, avair, wizard
stable: magnet, rattler
understable: apx, putt'r
I don't know innova or gateway that well but they both offer comparisons. If your using it for short putting almost all putters fly simillar(since it should hit before it finishes it's flight) so look for a comfortable grip over flight ratings. If your looking to drive off the tee with it- try the wizard.
Good point. I think my trip about stability is that I think I try so hard to push it straight that I throw it too slow. This is obviously bad for putts outside 20 feet. My push putting actually got better with the Birdie, which is why I started this thread in the first place. I'm quite certain there are better putters out there, but I don't want to fall in the trap of fixing something that ain't broke either.
Be carefull if you are looking at Aviars, because there are a FEW. The basic Aviar is stable to understable. The JK Pro Aviar is more stable. It the same stability as the KC Pro, but has a softer feel, and there is the BB Star Aviar. It's suppose to be the most stable, but it just feels like a KC or JK in Star plastic IMO.
One disc that hasn't been mentioned is the Omega putter by Millinnium. A LOT of people love this disc.
I think you are talking about a JK Pro cuz the KC Pro is hard.
ok, here is something else to consider. if you have small hands the thick rim putters are hard to control. my putter of choice is the XD. it fits my fingers well, i have recently picked up a gateway magic & have used it for the past month & it found a place into the bag. i really like it. cheers to gateway putters.
I was hoping someone would mention the XD. I love to use this for any putts that need to be understable, or for uphill as someone discussed earlier. Also a great disc to throw off the tee for short anny's.

With that said, go with what works for you. I use a rhyno as my main putter. I know its an overstable putter and not a lot of people like that, but it fits my style well for whatever reason and my putting has improved a lot since ive picked it up. It doesn't matter really what works for everyone else, its your game. Putting is more mental than the disc, so if you know the birdie is the best putter for you, go with it. You will be more confident and your game will start to improve.
The best advice I see here is 'go with what feels right for you.' I've been putting with a Birdie for years and wouldn't switch. It doesn't work for me as an approach disc or for very windy days, so I have another putter model for those situations. If you stick with the Birdie, consider finding a "Pro" model (not currently made) since they grab the chains better than DX based on my experiences.
I LOVE THE MAGIC
If you like it, stick with it.
But if you want a putter which you can also use for more than just putting, my choice would be the wizard.
Sometimes you go to tournaments and then every disc in your bag counts. So then it is better to have a putter in there which you can also use for approaches.Take 3. If you loose one, you will have back ups. But what you don't want is 1 putter which you can only use for putting.
I like the Aviar putter(best sold disc in the world). They also come in all different types of plastic which is handy with all the different weather types that we have. * I like to see you putt in the winter with a hard disc.... ;-)
But the wizard also comes in different plastic...so there you go!

And find a sponsor. Maybe some local store can help you out....
These New runs of Aviars are really Sweet !!!

as your game evolves you may grow into and out of discs. and then discover one again later that you had given up on.
