The Community of Disc Golfers and About All Things Disc Golf

Well, I am picking up for the Wii today (assuming I don't get called in) and am pretty excited for it. I have always been a big TW fan for 360 but when I heard that the Wii was having Disc Golf I had to over turn my love for TW on 360 for Wii. Is anyone else going to pick it up today?

I know that the DG section of the game is not to focus but I figure if I was going to get the game anyway why not get more. I will try to give some sort of review in the next day or two on how the DG section handles (not that I think it is going to be true to life). I figure by time I get off call I will have just enough time to squeeze in a real round of DG and then go home and check out the virtual DG!

OK, after playing about 4 courses I think I am set to give a review of the DG portion of Tiger Woods 10.

First lets start with the courses. Since all the courses are ball golf courses don't expect there to be much blockage in terms of trees. They do keep the sand traps in play as a one stroke penalty so that helps to stop players from just trying to go straight over towards the basket. Roughs have no penalty on your disc (even if you are parked in a bush) so no fear of going off the fairway. All holes are the same par as their ball golf counterpart, which really makes no difference in the game since you can adjust the score mentally if you wanted to. Only 1 tee is available for each hole so that is kind a bummer but at least you have 27 courses to have fun on.

Onward towards the disc selection. They give 3 options of discs. First is the driver, it is limited to a 150 yard range if you get to 100% (I normally am around 87-98%) which gives a nice range but will limit what some players are able to do. The mid-range goes 75 yards at max power, oddly I seem to use my mid-range more often in the TW version than I do in real DG. The putter is limited to a 20 yard range at max power. I have yet to miss with the putting in this game, it is like the disc just wants to go to the basket. Even chucking the disc hard it still seems to land smack in the basket if I am in putting range. I wish I was a good at putting in real life as I am in TW. Discs for the most part seem to instantly stop all forward motion once they hit the ground excluding the rare skip (1 skip in 4 rounds) and tomahawks.

Next I would like to address throw styles. When I first got into the DG portion I didn't notice any difference in the way you throw the disc and the way it acted in flight. After messing around a bit more I began to notice small differences in the shots. Not enough to make a real difference EXCLUDING tomahawking. Tomahawking seems to be the only real way to get your disc to roll and the only way to break the 150 cap on the driver. While the driving isn't really realistic it will show you the angle of you hand when in motion so it is nice to see if you have a kink in your form (factoring in that you are holding a "wiimote" instead of a disc). Forearm shots see to be the hardest to execute perfectly in TW but once you get the hang of it it isn't too rough. I would like to say that EA did take notice of the angle of the disc when you release it. It will have a nice realistic effect in its flight pattern if you have it off angle.

The last portion is longevity. I don't know for sure if the DG portion will have the staying power the ball golf portion of the game. There is no powering up the discs for fun and super throws and there is no customization of gear to help draw the player in. The only visual representation players will get is ghostly hand that you shows you how your hand is angled. Also, there is no online multiplayer for the DG portion either so unless you have friends over you will be flying solo.

Overall I think I would give the DG portion of Tiger Woods 10 a 7/10. A great idea and a solid start of new concept in video the video game real (motion sensor DG) but lacking in depth to draw in players that do not play the game in real life. A shame that no publisher would go out on a limb to develop a game solely for discers in the likes of this game. Maybe we can hope that EA will get a great response to this section of the game and act on it (or at least keep it going with TW 11).
A publisher has been working on an exclusively disc golf game for Wii:
