The Community of Disc Golfers and About All Things Disc Golf

I will be in Brighton, MI near Ann Arbor for software training from August 23-27. I chose this area for the disc golf so no need to list all the courses, I can't wait. My questions are:

1) what's the weather like in late August?

2) when does the sun go down that time of year?

3) what are the MUST play courses?

4) what courses to avoid?

The classes end by 5pm M-Th and Friday is optional for me, I'll do a morning at the most. The tobaggan course is not in play then I believe. Anyway, I'd love some input and I look forward to some more Michigan disc golf. (I played K-zoo Worlds).

Classes? Classes! They give you the book, right? You should seriously consider blowing off your class each day after the morning session and all day Friday. If you wait to play til after the classes the public courses will be very busy, at least most of them. There is no reason to come all the way from North Carolina to wait for huge bands of casuals on every hole. And from Brighton you will be in the heart of the disc golf universe with superb quality and quantity to choose from.

The closest good courses to Brighton are Kensington, Indy Lake and Hudson Mills (all within 25 minutes). Kensington is best to play during the day, it gets too busy by late afternoon. Indy is relatively new and isolated so it is not as busy. Hudson Mills has two courses on site giving you a better chance to avoid backups.

There are leagues every night somewhere in the area, sometimes at private courses, which are preferable. If you can get free for an afternoon, I can set up a game anywhere in the area. My family responsibilities kick in by about 4:30 each day, unless it is a league night(Tuesday and Thursday) for me.
Interesting suggestion Mark, however the classes are work related thus integral to the trip and the only reason I get to go at all. I'd be lying if I said the thought didn't enter my evil head though. I'll have to deal with casuals like I do on any other courses. Looks like Cass Benton is off the list though for that reason, too many people have sustained that objection.
Albion is a most see?
So I got back from my trip and I thought I would share some experiences.
Sunday got to the hotel @7:30 so I found Brighton H.S. & played there. Cool for a school course, deuced every hole.
Monday played all 27 at Black Locust with some locals and enjoyed it very much. Shot 86(-3) from the shorts. Thanks to Tony & Matt for showing me around. Witnessed an ace on hole 20 behind us.
Tuesday played Bandemer from all 3 sets of tees. Shot Red -4, White -2, Blue +3. Finished just before the rain.
Wednesday played Independence Lake short layout. Shot 50 then played the 1-3,14-18 circuit again. Very beautiful course, I felt like I owned the property myself.
Thursday played all 28 holes at the Ponds at Lakeshore. The drive was aggravating south of Ann Arbor but I finally got there and spent some time at the Throwshop. Thanks to Andy for playing every hole with me cuz I would've never found my way around there. Shot a 79 from the shorts.
Friday I had almost all day off so I played all 48 at Hudson Mills. This has been my Mecca since I watched the 2000 Worlds video and it did not dissapoint. The course was groomed to perfection and I enjoyed every hole. Original I shot 64 including 5 long tees and Monster shot 74 including 5 long tees. I got a courtesy ticket for not having my bag sticker so that was a first. Incredible park and great people.

Brighton is a cool little town for those who haven't been there. Lots of bar & grilles and very close to all the courses except Ypsilanti. Hope to get back there again sometime, thanks to Michigan for having such great parks and supporting disc golf.
Dude I can't believe you went to The Throw Shop and didn't talk to the Calhouns about playing BRATS. It's the best course in that area HANDS DOWN! I'm glad you enjoyed the area and we hope you come back soon!
shoulda bought your pass! they love to take our hard earned $$
BRATS was on the list but just didn't happen with the schedule I had. Next time for sure.
The $2 pass was an oversight on my part. I paid up and played the Monster course without incident.
Good times.
Good stuff. Glad you had fun.
