The Community of Disc Golfers and About All Things Disc Golf

On Wednesday the 9th of Dec. at 4:30 pm. A co-worker (who is an Eagle Scott Master) and myself will be going before the Ionia County Parks Advisory Board to propose the installation of a 18 hole disc golf course in Bertha Brock County Park in Ionia, MI. If they give us the 'good-ahead', then our next stop will be to the County Commissioner's Office to get permission to build the course. If they give us the green light, then it will be the long road of getting money and building it.

I saw the whole discussion of how 'Nathan' the Eagle Scott put a course in his neck of the woods; and how all our fellow disc golfers gave him guidance and advice. I am asking now for that same advice. Please post any descriptions, outlines, success stories, testimonies, etc...

Attached is a Map of the park. The layered green area is where I will be proposing the course to be installed. It's more than enough land with a massive sledding hill.

Thanks :)

very nice derek! i hope everything goes through!!! ps. i think its eagle scout, not scott, hahaha just givin ya a hard time...
how many courses is enough for you michiganers? j/k. looks like a good place for a course, good luck.
enough..you make it sound like enough is possible!
When I was talking to my computer instuctor about disc golf and courses. He showed me how he prepares for going in front of city councils.
1. Show the possitives in regards to how it will help the city.
2. pictures of before and after areas. The pictures he had were of garbaged strewn overbrush. Then of a nice clean and cleared out area.
3. Already have an association in place. Show them you have backing and there will be no cost incured by the city. If poss.
4. Try to already have allies in the park and rec division, because they will just deffer to them any way.
Those are all I can remember for know.

Peace!
Sounds like good advice to me. The first initial meeting with the Park Advisory Board isn't what scares me, since the individual I am going with used to be on the board and still knows a lot of the members. He tells me they're pretty laid back and one of them has player at Fallsburg Park before. It's the meeting with the County Commissioner's Office that rattles my bones.

Not sure how to get an association started with there being no disc golf course in Ionia to begin with?
Can you "piggy back" onto an already established association? Is there like a Michigan Disc golf Association?
Sweet, Irving Park is one of the success stories I was hoping to use. I am also looking for success story where a disc golf course DID NOT negatively effect the parks ecosystem. I was thing of Fallsburg park for that, but I don't know who to get ahold of.
There is Michigan Disc Golf Organization. I guess it's time to shoot them an email.
I'll look him up.
One question i would ask of the boy scout is ......... has his troop actually got out there and played the game with their leaders? if so get the scouter to get a little video of them and their enthusiasm for the game ....... I mean who in their right minds turn down a boy scout and their love of the outdoors and sports?
I'm glad you brought this up. I am hoping to use the Eagle Scouts to gain favor when it comes time to asking permission, also for additional labor, or possibly fund raising. It was the Eagle Scout Master's Idea to put a course at this park. He has played the sport before and he and I will be going in front of the board together. It maybe to late to get a video of 'his' troop playing disc golf since it is full-blown winter here in MI. But a lot of his troops are looking for service projects to help their community, and participating in disc golf course installation just maybe it.
Be cautious around the slidding hill. Disc golf is a year round sport and does not go well with the kids on the hill.
