YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!!!!!

It was a dumbass rule.
Poor suckers playing will wish the buncrs continued. Sounds like what happens now is a rethrow plus penalty EVERY time on EVERY OB even on holes where that wasn't the case before. Talk about pain and score padding with every OB the equivalent of a 2-shot penalty and the course will play even slower than before.
For once I think I have to agree with you Chuck.

Stroke & distance...brutal! I've seen so many shots just a foot or two OB on that course...seems rather harsh.
From 2010 Caddy Book revised:

Marking options
for all OB limited to previous lie
(except for tee shots on Hole 12)

Took away BunCr rule, but added this.

This will be quite the twist.

Throw a 240 approach shot, slam the basket, disc rolls OB, take a penalty and try it again from same lie.

Ouch!!
So no rethrow only on 888. That's a small bone. This is a potential labor saver since flaggers may not be needed in some usual spots like near hole 5 basket where the flagger normally watches to see if a shot flies over or touches inbounds before going OB. Not really needed now since most can see if they landed OB and then have to rethrow no matter what.
Okay, that sucks. Quit messing with rules that work fine already. Standard OB practice. Penalty stroke and throw from wherever it was last in bounds.
Throw and distance was the tradition for several of the OB areas long before the buncr rule came in. That's why the buncr rule came in because it was a more appropriate penalty for a missed throw on certain holes. They don't like last point IB for going OB on several holes at the USDGC because some OB lines run parallel to the fairway and it's too hard for the groups or spotters to fairly determine where a shot finally was fully OB on long throws along an OB line.
what's this BunCrs rule anyways?
For USDGC, it was just like OB where you have to rethrow if you land in a buncr but there's no penalty other than counting the throw you just made into the buncr. It's like a true one throw penalty rather than the 2-throw version they plan to use this year for OB counting throw plus penalty.
Does this happen only on Thursdays?
Sounds ridiculous.
They experiment alot with the rules at the USDGC. Without that BunCR rule, Josh Anthon doesn't set the course record last year as his 4 on 17 would have been a 6.
Although maybe he plays it at that point to make sure he gets a 3 by laying up and then crossing over.
