What Division am I?

I started playing in January, and I am slowly but surely getting better.  Right now, I'm averaging in the high 60's in a 18-hole round, with one particular shorter course (Bud Hill in Memphis represent!) in the lower 60s... when I don't throw O. B.

 

I don't exactly have the fifty bucks to give up for a PDGA membership, so I don't have a rating, but that doesn't really matter because very few of the tournaments in the Memphis, TN area, if any, are PDGA tournaments. They're mostly Southern Nationals or laid-back local events.

 

I know that every course is different, which is why there is a PDGA rating system, but on an average, anyone have any thoughts as to whether I should play rec/novice or intermediate in tournaments this summer?

No matter what div you start with, keep this in mind. If you are consistantly on the lead card during the final round, its time to bump up.

Play Novice for your first event. If they don't offer that, play Recreational. Once you play an event you will be able to tell if you need to move up or not.

theres your answer. start at the bottom division and you will be able to tell when you need to move up. It doesnt go by how many you win, but how often you are placing in top 5 is a good weigh point!

My experience: last year I played in Adv. Masters (over 40) and got butt kicked (5th of 5). Next event played in Intermediate and got my butt kicked (did not come in last but still 18/23). The 3rd event offered only Intermediate and above, I again 4th (out of 4).

Last year on a basic 18 hole (no real woods to speak of) I was throwing around par (54). This year my average is below par by three throws. I have played over 2 dozen rounds so far and have only missed two putts inside 20ft. I practiced all winter on putting. This year I have also finally thrown over 300ft, hit my lowest score on 18 holes a -11, and I have birdied every local hole and overthrown every hole (except one) locally.

Last item on point: The play in an event is much slower and it is hard to develop a good rhythm while playing. Each shot to me becomes the first shot of the day. Just my humble opinion of the day.

This year I am will start at Rec. and move up. However, my throwing is up and my putting is better. I struggled on where to play. I am still going to do Rec. I am playing to events this weekend. On one there are right now 8 people. If I finish in the top three I will be done with rec. The second one I would need to win, three in rec right now, to be done with rec.
