The Community of Disc Golfers and About All Things Disc Golf

Recently I had over heard a colleague of mine talking about disc golf and all he had to say was "disc golf I thought that only hippies and homeless people played that sport", needless to say I was POed. I know that there may be some people that fit into this cross section of society and if you are one of them I'm not judging you and I mean you no disrespect, but I do not and I have heard these remarks said for far to long. I know that there are other people out there that own business and work in successful jobs that also take offense to this type of stereotype please help me show my coworker that their are successful people affiliated with this sport!

I don't know what you're looking for this thread... but I'll add my 2 cents in... I'm a college grad with a degree in aviation business... I work at the Atlantic City International Airport... for the economy being as bad as it is... I'd say I did well for my self... I am and will always be a hippie at heart it is just how I was raised (mom was a anti-war hippie in the late 60's what can I say)... if the guy is a football fan see what his reaction is when you tell him that Peyton Manning plays disc golf...

I know we are subject to negative stereotypes. My Wife hears it every time she says to someone in her professional career, "My Husband plays disc golf." Are then stereotypes warranted? From what I see on the course most of the Summer, honestly: Yes. The basic mold for a disc golfer isn't too far off what many people notice. Of course, we (employed, educated, sober, etc.) are in the minority as far as what people perceive, I believe. There may be more of us, but you just don't notice us as easily. Do the young kids I meet on the course remember the guy playing with his Wife who gave him a mini? Maybe not. Does the same kid remember the group of 8 high and drunken idiots carrying one disc and one twelve pack each and annoying many people on the course that same afternoon? Probably. And what do Mom and Dad see and hear from across the park? The subdued sober people or the raucous drunkard/stoners?

Think of it this way: If 1,000 disc golfers play a hole and no one writes a single thing on the tee sign, no one playing after them says anything. When the 1,001st person writes a crude sexual reference on the sign, everybody that plays afterward sees it. It may be there a day or an entire Summer. There was only one idiot, but that's all people see and remember.

That said, I'm going to hit the snow a play a round.
pilot,master gardener,help with stage productions,father. play volleyball,kayak,ski.
I have a AS & BS and am currently a senior network planning analyst (building and maintaining large data networks).

Having said that, I celebrate the hippie origins of our sport, I'd much rather hang out with a hippie than some corporate drone.

Disclaimer -- I unrepentantly indulged in the hippie lifestyle from 69-mid70s, I have no regrets and found many useful values that I still carry today from that time in my life.
That stereotype is common and not entirely undeserved.

I have a law degree from U of Michigan Law School and my wife has a masters degree. My daughter is maintaining a 3.5 in tough pre-med program. We're all disc golfers.
Just a Construction worker here. Well crew leader but the problem is the image. People like the pros at players cup this year who ruined things for everyone in FLORIDA. The Course is being removed becase some people don't care about the image. Most people only hear about the bad things that disc golfers do. Tell your Buddy that in Florida With roughly One month Preparation that we raised over $1000 for the Susan G. Komen breast cancer foundation in one day. Had a dunk tank on the course it was sweet. You could also tell him that at most tournaments there are food drives. Sometimes $1 of you entry goes towards some charity. All in all The majority of us do wonders for the image of disc golf. Unfortunately, it only takes a few to ruin it.
Wow!!! With all the qualifications on this thread....I think we can take over the World!!!!
I am a news and a wedding Videographer.
I have a B.S. Mathematics. When I am not marching against the war, burning my draft notice, selling sandwiches at the Widespread Panic concert or taking a bath in the Wendy's bathroom sink, I am a self-taught computer professional serving as the Technical Lead on web projects for a top 10 defense company.

Forgot to mention that when I was visiting Ben in Augusta the day he and Hos hit 1,000 courses, we went to a nearby course right away to play Ben's 1,001st. Met up with a played with a 60-year-old judge who plays disc golf. He lives closer to Atlanta but comes neat August several times a month as a traveling judge and tries to finish up early to disc when he does.
