Can We Do It?

From time to time I've talked with people about this, and at the Chills at the Mills talked with some more people about it, including Foz.

I saw a nice piece of property with 46 acres of partly forested land, with a restored very old house and some large out buildings, about 8 miles southwest of my home, which is itself 7 miles southwest of the center of Ann Arbor. It has 1,300' of waterfront on a private lake.

It was only $640,000.

I know, that's more than Sheila and I can afford, too. But is it more than some combination of people who can invest a smaller piece of that could afford to figure out some way to purchase and develop a world-class course and clubhouse on?

I don't think so. (And that is just a representative piece of land, we may locate something closer.) It's just, well, you get the idea.

Just wanted to put out there that there is 116 acres for sale located directly behind my house in Napoleon. I know its not exactly Ann Arbor but it could definately be turned into a destination only a few minutes away.
The asking price right now is $795,000. I haven't really seen the split between open field and woods but if I had to guess I'd say 80% is wooded. I'm pretty sure there is pond/rivers on it also. It would be awesome to put a few courses on it. Maybe a pavilion/lodge. I would have already bought it if I could afford it. But if there are investors out there, let me know. I've received a few maybes from non-discgolf players that would invest if I could prove there could be a profit made off of it. I don't know. Just thought I'd mention it, and dream.

You know it's really fun to dream about your own private course or a disc golf country club and all the possibilities. Normally that's all it is - just dreaming on a sunny day, normally when there are too many people on the course or a group of 12 newbies slowing down the round.

Reality normally sets in as there are many obstacles to such a dream I have been amazed of the resources, talent and drive that we, local disc golfers, represent. The local real estate market is a disaster if you’re trying to sell your home or land but it offer many opportunities to those who are looking to buy or build.

We also have a Pay to Play case study unfolding in front of us to provide insight to the current situation and we can watch to see how this one will evolve.

There is no better time to at least begin to formalize ideas and interests in such ideas.

I for one would love to be able to invest a modest amount of money in land, especially if it could be used to provide greater enjoyment in the disc golfing area, with potential for more. When I dream I see a place that offers my whole family a great place to escape to and enjoy the things we love to do, with like minded people. I’d like enough land to be able to grow based on success to have two 24 hole championship courses and maybe a small technical practices course, a lodge that could expand as well from a basic shelter to a “real lodge”.

I already spend effort trying to improve my local courses and would rather know it’s going into improving my investment – ownership is an amazing thing. It’s also great to have some additional advantages of being able to buy more land than I can afford myself, and being able to achieve bigger things than I can achieve myself, through the collective efforts and input of a group.

Blah, Blah, Blah…

Ok - whether you just want to dream out loud or you really think it could be a reality the key is to share your ideas and info and collect them / write them down.

Who is interested – well that’s in progress – if you joined this club you have indicated at least some interest.

Are there common ideas of what people would like? Disc Golf Country Club; Private, members and pay to play, ….? Just a single course, course with club house, ability to host major events, models for sustainability, any facts and figures from other similar courses or clubs.

Please share your ideas and thoughts – don’t leave them on the course – share them here.
