I remember when I was a kid, my Dad used to disappear for a few days at a time. There was the time my Mom had to go to Columbus in the middle of the night to pick him up after a DUI. He lost his license for a couple of years. He used to use my Mom's ID when writing checks. I remember the mouthwash he kept in his car. There was a time in high school when he never came to pick me up after school. My Mom had to leave work to get me. He didn't come back for 3 days. He always felt guilty afterwards. He would stay in his room all the next day. We were lucky, he never had an accident and he wasn't a mean drunk. He just really hated his job. He was transferred from California to Ohio because of his problem.
But the good news is he has been sober for over 20 years now. I was worried when my Mom died that he might slip. He didn't. He also quite smoking. I'm very proud of him. Because of all I witnessed from him and watching friends and people, I've made the choice to stay away. It's easier when you have a spouse who doesn't drink either. Good luck to all those dealing with inner demons. Be strong, reach out for help! Peace

Wow Eric! You brought tears to my eyes! My heart is touched! My best friend commited suicide 21 years ago. It's hard to believe it's been that long ago, still hurts like it was a week ago, as tears flow easily. The thing about her was that she too was an alcoholic. I was so so tough on her about her alcoholism. I did not realize the true nature of the disease. Today I have greater understanding. I now know how it affects the mind, the body, and the spirit. I know that it's not just a matter of not touching the stuff, going to a "shrink", or getting God in your life. Addiction alters the mind, which means we don't have a "normal" mind, as some people do. We actually think differently than other people, our perceptions are screwed up alot of the time. Our bodies are affected in various and evident ways. It affects our soul & our spirituality is usually lacking. When we recover from addiction, we have to remember to pay attention to all 3 aspects. This is where A.A. has helped me tremendously, I could not have done it without the groups. That is how I've been able to stay clean and sober for 7 months and 15 days. I am so grateful, I've gone through a real tough year, but, I am surviving, clean and sober, and that's what counts. Please don't give up on yourself ever! Each and every one of us affect many people around us, we have a reason for being "alive and kicking". LIFE is a great privledge, and just realizing that, I believe, is half the battle! God Bless You All!!

My family has a real bad drug and drink problem. My parents did not drink or drug, but my moms side of the family is a mess with several suicides and drug and drink related deaths. I know the line, and do not cross it, because I would fall right down the well with the rest of them. Mom and Dad, thanks for putting the hammer down on me when I was younger, Your friendship and involvement in my life has probably saved my life. I will be 50 years old in less than 2 months. Good group. thanks

I've been clean for about four years. Life is a lot better when you eat and sleep more then once a week. Marriage is a lot better too.

I've been in and out of treatment centers and hospitals since I was 15 (41 now) and was never able to get clean and sober till 2004. my third DWI finally made me face my problem and I was sober for 2 1/2 years and very involved with AA. but then I tried to kill myself by drinking anti-freeze last year and all sorts of craziness ensued. I have been drinking a bit on and off and struggle with depression but I'm still alive and kicking. I moderate on a suicide discussion forum and that seems to help. nothing like helping others to make you forget about your own problems.

peace.

I quit cigs about 9 1/2 months ago "That was really tough" I still want them. I have an occasional beer but because of abuse in my family I'm glad I never got into it much. I believe all things in moderation but for some, like me with cigarettes I just can't have any at all.

I'm all about playing a clean and sober disc golf. I enjoy the occasional beer but when it comes to disc golf... I'm all business. I don't smoke either.
