Disc Golf and College, what more could you ask for? The last Saturday in September saw the top three Iowa collegiate disc golf teams come together and battle for the Midwest Collegiate Disc Golf Championship at Iowa Western Community College, home of the tournament ready Treasure Cove Disc Golf Course.
It was a nearly perfect disc golf day, with a very competitive field of college disc golfers. Tee off was under way at 9:45am with each school bringing 3 players and 1 alternate and perhaps a sponsor or coach. Two of the schools traveled around 4 hours to get there. After the morning round, the tight team race saw Indians Hills Community College holding on to a slim lead with Iowa Western Community College and University of Northern Iowa tied close behind.
The winner of the collegiate tournament wins a school trophy and a paid registration to the National Collegiate Disc Golf Tournament played in South Carolina next Spring.
The final round saw Indian Hills open up their lead and win the 1st place trophy. University of Northern Iowa finished second with Iowa Western finishing third.
Winning Medalist honors was Tim Ragen of Indian Hills, flying up from the second card to win it all by 4 strokes with a smoking 57 from the blue tees. Iowa Western’s Wil Schram finished 2nd with Rich Kennedy of Indian Hills coming in 1 stroke behind Wil.
Collegiate disc golf is rather new and just getting started, but holds a bright future as disc golf grows bigger and bigger. The college players not only had the opportunity to play against fellow disc golfers, but also had a chance to represent their schools as a team sport. As the teams left for home, they had memories of playing a competitive tournament, on a beautiful day, with new found friends. What more could you ask for?
