Hebrews 12:14 (NIV) - Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.

Today’s commentary by Dave Whitehead, Senior Pastor, GraceNYC.org

The Scripture places the responsibility of harmony with our neighbor upon our shoulders. As we look at the fractured relationships in our lives, have we made every effort to live in peace? There are some things that we may avoid simply because they are uncomfortable, but God uses the uncomfortable to bring His holiness into our lives. Are you experiencing dullness in your relationship with God? Check your earthly relationships to make sure you are doing all that you can, for the two issues may be connected.
Isaiah 1:17 (NIV) - Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.

Today’s commentary by Dave Whitehead, Senior Pastor, GraceNYC.org

Earlier in this passage, God stated that He was not moved with Israel’s dead religious activities. Their pious observances had become a way to avoid true responsibility. In a time when there was no social security or welfare, orphans and widows were relegated to poverty and great need. One of the results of a relationship with God will be a desire to help the weak and helpless. As the book of James states, this is when religion is pure and undefiled.
1 Peter 5:8-9 (NIV) - Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

Let’s not underestimate the fact that we live in a world filled with spiritual battles. There is an enemy who is looking for o...ur weak spots—the places of inconsistency in our lives—that he can exploit for our hurt. This is why the apostle Peter tells us to stand firm in our faith, for our walk with God has to be based upon His promises, not our abilities. We all have weaknesses, and unless we focus our minds and hearts on what God has said, we become an easy target for the devil and his appetites. So keep your eyes and ears open, because this is a fight that will find you, no matter where you are.
Philippians 2:3-4 (NIV) - Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

What would happen to churches if this attitude prevailed? What could the church do if no one cared whose name was on top? This is what Paul challenged the Philippians with and it is a good challenge for us today. Do we ultimately trust that God sees our lives, or do we jockey for attention using spiritual language? This is a test that every follower of Christ must pass in order to go forward in maturity.

Proverbs 16:18 (NIV) - Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.

Today’s commentary by Dave Whitehead, Senior Pastor, GraceNYC.org

Pride has been depicted for centuries as a destructive force. How many examples do we need to see before we realize that pride exposes our insecurities, and our insecurities will drive us to our ruin? It is far better to work on the inner qualities of our character than the outward hubris of success, for without that inner awareness we too will become examples of pride—and that very pride will become our downfall.

Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.

– Psalm 27:14 (NIV)

Today’s commentary
by Dave Whitehead, Senior Pastor, GraceNYC.org, Author of Making Sense of the Bible

It takes strength to wait for the LORD. We want answers now, but sometimes God is found in the delay. He uses waiting to form things in our soul that we won’t get any other way. It is better to take heart and wait upon the LORD than to take things into our own hands.
