Something about trying to get employed just really screws things up when it comes to play time. So sorry I missed Monday, I was really looking forward to it. I had practice all week (played 18 holes three times each with a BUZZ, a STINGRAY, and a DART) and had a bit of a small playoff of sorts to figure out which one to play... (my DART was the choice too, which is my putter.... usually did between 3 - 4 better with the DART)..... so I was super bummed when I had to go to do work paperwork Monday night.

Great Idea to help keep skills sharp.... I was really looking forward to it. Wind is a killer lately as well.

Lots to talk about this week. I attended a meeting with the City of Mesa Parks and Recreation Supervisor of Park Maintenance, the Parks and Recreation Supervisor of Improvements and the city Volunteer Coordinator this morning and we finally got official approval for the Emerald Park upgrades. It’s amazing what an undertaking it is to get approval for changes that we are going to pay for. We are fully approved for the project with some stipulations about strength and depth of the concrete for the tee pads and the sign designs. I expected those conditions, so it’s all good news.

Now comes the hard part, we have to raise the money and/or get donations for the materials, especially the concrete. It will be much easier to do all of the tee pads at one time, so we really need a company to donate all of the concrete, the ABC and loan us the forms if possible. If you know anyone in the concrete business, let me know. The material can be donated through a City of Mesa non-profit foundation, so it would be tax deductible. We will require a fair amount of volunteer labor on one specific day to dig out for the pads and set the forms prior to pouring. We are still looking for donations of money for the baskets and sleeves.

Regarding our league play last night, we had a one disc (midrange or putters only) challenge. It was also a windy night, so for medium players like me it was very humbling. I can certainly see how my skills would improve if I did this more often, so we’ll look to have these special nights on a regular basis. Except for those players who are new and still working to establish a handicap, the scores from last night’s round will not be counted towards your handicap. We don’t want players to stay home because they are afraid they’ll mess up their average.

Rob Bockman (throwing a Roc) came out on top of a 3-way tie for first in the handicap division with a 55. Rob won the tie breaker due to his handicap (see rule explanation below). Rory Self threw a natural score of 48, which is pretty darn impressive when you figure he was throwing one disc (a trusty Buzz) on a windy night. Curt took the CTP and Aaron M. took the longest putt, both on hole 5.

They say that there are two kinds of computers, those that have crashed and those that will crash. Last night the computer decided to act up and we were not able to hand out the bag tags because I’m not bright enough to do the math in my head. We had a great turnout with groups starting on all 9 holes. Karla, on her first night with an official handicap, won with an adjusted score of 49. I think that I might have seen a tear or two in her husband Ryan's eyes as he was the leader until Karla came in. Aaron M. threw a 44 for the best natural score. CTP’s were won by Chris J and Toad.

Next week league will be one disc only!! We’re going to restrict that one disc to a midrange or putter, your choice. So bring your marker and your favorite buzz, roc, challenger or whatever you throw. We do this because it’s fun to change things up and because we’ll all improve our skills and learn to throw better.

Remember this Saturday is the skills challenge put on by Aaron Murray. Come for biscuits and gravy at 9:00 and be ready to play at 10:00.

Next week's one disc only league night sounds like a blast.... now I just need to figure out which one it will be..... Buzzzz.... Stingray..... or Dart..... hmmmmm.

Great game last night!

Congratulations Karla!

No matter how well everyone threw last night, we were already winners due to the beautiful Arizona springtime weather. 28 golfers participated and Andy Stearns won the adjusted handicap score with a 47 and took home some new plastic. Aaron M. threw a 42 and had the best natural score. CTP’s were won by Jack Adams and Andrew Stearns on 8 and 17.

It figures doesn't it? The very week after an ace was thrown to clean out the pool, Michael O'Brien throws another. So who know what will happen this coming Monday? I guess you'll have to show up to find out.

Drum roll please… On the 80th week of the league and after 43 consecutive weeks of no aces, Chris James FINALLY threw an ace on hole 18. He won $200 and earned the envy of the other 26 golfers present. Casey won the handicap score with a 42 and Aaron won the natural score with a 47. Just for fun we moved the tee for hole 3 over towards the pond and also let the players buy up to two Mulligan’s for $1 each. CTP’s were won by Brad and Tyler on holes 5 & 11.

We will probably stay at a 5:00 start time during March and move to 5:30 in April. Around May 1st we'll switch to our summer start time of 6:00.
