I owe my start to Frisbee and disc golf play to the MFA. I picked up Frisbeeing at Gustavus Adolphus -- ultimate and an object-target course near the Rundstrom Hills dorm -- and became a member of the MFA back in the mid- to late-70s. I even edited the newsletter (MFA Flyer?) for a year or so. Still recall fondly meeting Steady "Ed" at the first Minnehaha course (built around 1978, but didn't last long), and who can forget the funky saucer DG baskets that Jim Challas designed and installed at some of the first courses in the TC? Great memories, so it's heartening to see the MFA is still going strong.

Although I have lived in Japan for most of my 30 post-college years (I grew up here as well), I get back to MN for a few weeks every summer (my wife grew up in Paynesville) and do get a few DG rounds in at the Annandale course (Clearwater/Pleasant Lake; not a bad layout) -- we've got a small summer place nearby -- as well as some of the St. Cloud / Twin Cities courses. Loved the Blue Ribbons Pine course I played with my son last June.

After nearly 30 years of non-competitive DG play, I've returned to playing "socially" and competitively by joining DG monthlies and tournaments here in the land of shorter courses (tight courses in limited park space) and the 150 class disc. The Japanese players / clubs have been very welcoming and enjoyable to play with. The age range of folks I've played with has ranged from 6 to the 70s. Unlike the States, the future of DG in Japan seems to be largely with the over-65, retired folks who have plenty of time on their hands and many years of good health ahead.

I look forward to lugging my 150g discs with me this coming summer and tackling the revised Bryant Lake layout, Elm Creek (if it's open), and any other new courses. If any Minnesotan flingers ever find their way on this side of the big pond and want to try a course or two, let me know.

Is anyone ever on here? I'm heading to Am World's in August. Willing to provide a ride to others. Still working on figuring out where I'm staying. I will be staying out in Ohio and Michigan until the end of August though, so you would have to fly back, take Amtrak, or the Megabus (cheapest)- unless you can find another ride back.
