Disc golf course may open next month

A disc golf course in Isabella County could be open as soon as July.

In the works for more than a year, the course, which will be located in Deerfield Park, is currently under construction by volunteers who are clearing foliage from approximately 40 acres.

Isabella County Parks and Recreation Director Sue Ann Kopmeyer gave county commissioners an update on the progress made on the course at a Tuesday meeting.

Bids have been submitted for the purchase of baskets, which could be installed within the next few weeks, Kopmeyer said.

Plans call for an 18-hole course; through fundraisers - including Commissioner Roger Trudell sponsoring a hole - there is enough currently enough money to construct 14 holes, which cost $300 each, Kopmeyer said.

While the goal is to have the park open by July, Kopmeyer said it could be ready sooner.

"We think it's doable," she said. "If we can get the baskets.

"That's what we need to start making the course."

Plans call for the course to span areas by the sledding hill, the Oak Ridge Interpretive Trail, the Fussman Pavilion and the beach, she said.

Volunteers, most of whom are avid disc golfers, have been clearing the area for about a month, Kopmeyer said.

Former parks and recreation employee Jordan Bruusema prompted the county to look into building a disc golf course and is working on the project as part of a graduate studies project, Kopmeyer said.

"It's always been very doable," she said. "It was just a matter of finding the right spot."

While disc golf is similar to traditional golf with the use of different sized discs rather than different clubs, it does not use as much land and does not necessitate the clearing of vegetation, Kopmeyer said.

However, there is an abundance of invasive Autumn Olive bushes where the course is planned, some of which are being removed, Kopmeyer said.

Early talks about the creation of a disc golf course focused on Meridian Park, but that was deemed too natural to house a disc golf course.

County officials decided on Deerfield Park as a more suitable location.

"It will fit nicely," Kopmeyer said.

While a tentative name for the course is Deerfield Nature Park Disc Golf Course, Commissioner Jim Moreno suggested that parks and recreation have a contest for naming the course.

Hey Guys and Gals,
Let's plan on taking a couple vehicles full of crazed golfers to Newaygo State Park next Sunday (4/19) for a random draw "Max Doubles" fundraising event. The $10 entry will go towards helping Max Nunn make a full recovery. I've put a flier on my website.

CMU Cool Campus Tourney

Mark, Jeff and I were talking and since a lot of people can't go to the Friday night league, we are going to run a league on Tuesdays starting tomorrow at 6. So if you can make it out we will be there and ready to go. See you all tomorrow hopefully!

one thing to remembet about fitz is it is more control of your shots than anything else. Pick a line and hit it and you will be fine. on # 6 it is a down hill and short shot. I put a putter on a line in there. It is something that you have to take a look at and pick a line when you are at the basket. If you have any questions about fitz feel free to call me.
