The Community of Disc Golfers and About All Things Disc Golf

Hey guys,

In an attempt to consolidate information about disc golf in New Mexico, as well as provide a convenient place to organize events and share media, I created a Facebook group called "New Mexico Disc Golf". I encourage anyone with a Facebook account to join here:

It is still a work in progress and I could use some help administrating it if anyone is interested. I'm also hoping to get Bill & Sue on-board (the folks who run www.wisudg.com) since I'm getting most of the tournament information and news from their newsletter.

I hope I'm not stepping on any toes here but, the biggest problem I noticed when getting into the local scene was the difficulty of finding information and getting to know the right people. Facebook would make it really easy for newcomers (to New Mexico or the sport in general) to find this information and participate in an active community. I know a few people may prefer to keep things the way they are now: small and tight-nit. But the fact of the matter is, the sport is exploding and it's time to start thinking big. Just my 2 cents.

I added a link on there back to this group in an effort to help this grow as well. Not trying to steal your thunder, just want more people to get involved is all. :)
Hey Kevin,

I think this is a great idea. I had a very similar idea recently, however I think we should create our own .ning network. I made one for my local club here in Portales and it is incredibly easy and fairly cheap to boot. You can see what I have done here: www.pvillainsdiscgolfclub.ning.com or www.windgardens.ning.com

I'm really thinking about trying to get something organized with the state. Perhaps we should join forces?
I yea could be down for collaborating on a .ning site for NM. Way down the road I was actually thinking designing a professional site for the state since I am a web designer by side-trade (I say side-trade because it's not my main source of income. I mostly do it for family, friends and small business)

Initially I was a bit critical of .ning sites because they always felt a bit clunky and bloated, but I do like what you've done with the P-villains site. I guess once you tweak it enough you can make it look pretty nice. My only worry is having too many different sites for people to use. I supposed having just two main sites to monitor (ning and Facebook) wouldn't be too bad. Then maybe down the road we could work on converting the ning site to a full-fledged professional site. Until then though, we need to get the user base.

Right now I'm just trying to get all semi-active disc golfers in the state together in one community, rather than separate smaller ones (not that there's anything wrong with separate communities, I just think it would be nice to have one place to go to for all state news, events, league info etc). I understand that not everyone has a Facebook account so doing the ning site is a good idea to get more people involved. I could advertise it in the Facebook group, and as long as we make sure both places stay up-to-date with the same information it would work out great I think.
that sounds good to me, untill recently it was hard to find out any info on new mexico places unless you went ther yourself and ran into the locos ther to get info when the league/tournys are.
Hell, if we could bypass making a .ning site and jump right in to a full fledged web-site, that would be great! I happen to work for an ISP and could probably host the site for free. All we would need is a domain name. I am also a designer, but I lack skills in the web design department. Anyways, let me know what you think.
Nice, what ISP do you work for? Pretty much all my friends who I play disc golf with in Albuquerque are big computer geeks who work in IT and run web servers and stuff. I'm a pretty big computer geek myself, but I tend to gravitate towards the front-end design aspect of websites rather than programming the backend stuff, which is what I usually bug them for :P

Anyway I'm down for whatever as soon as I have some free time. I hadn't planned on doing anything for the website for another couple months, but I can start working on a design soon and I'll let you know when I have something to show you for feedback etc. If you have any ideas in terms of design and features, let me know.

P.S. If you'd like to be an admin for the Facebook group let me know; you seem to have a finger on the pulse of disc golf over in your neck of the woods.
