Throwback to the Future with Super Class

OK, some of you have heard rumblings regarding the new option for PDGA sanctioned events coming in 2009 called Super Class. Super Class is a newly defined category of super-sized golf discs that may weigh up to 200 grams, have bigger rim heights more like catch discs, and a minimum diameter (23.7cm) over an inch larger than our long distance drivers. Super Class will add something new to the existing mix of the almost 1000 disc golf events TDs have been sanctioning. In fact, PDGA members can earn a whole new Super Class rating separate from their regular PDGA rating.

Yes, it's truly a throwback to the future. Super Class discs will initially be based on the larger diameter Frisbee® discs we've all played catch with, but molded in much heftier golf weights to work well in the wind and penetrate chain baskets. Presto! By throwing a variety of Super Class discs that don't fly as far as typical golf discs, many of our shorter par 3 courses now turn into true golf challenges with everything from par 3s, 4s, 5s and even some 6s. Using Super Class discs, the winning balance tilts more toward touch and accuracy versus technology and power.

There are other molds never submitted and there may not be info available on those: http://www.pdga.com/documents/pdga-approved-discs-xls

I'd like to ask the good folks of this group if anyone knows of a good source of old info regarding the various Wham-O molds of old and their corresponding weights. There's a pic below of a Wham-O time-line but I'm having a bear of a time finding any more specific information out here on the web. Wham-o's site doesn't offer to much in the way of history and I've read all about everything related except for what I'm after which is a "mold number to weight" chart of sorts... any assistance is greatly appreciated. Mahalo

Comment by JohnnyMax on August 30, 2009 at 6:58pm: Yeah, no doubt, the Zephyr is the SuperClass Golf Disc. The preferred WFDF Accuracy disc. That thumb ridge gives a more powerful grip too.

Comment by Jamie 'gr8rocshot' Ruane on August 30, 2009 at 6:47pm: I was reading the updates on the Super Class Nationals going on this weekend.....it looks like most of the competitors are throwing Zephrys in varying weights. Throwing the other day with Chris and BC it was clear that the Zephyr's the best Disc in Super Class right now... If they did alter the minimum size or just combined Vintage Class with a minimum diameter requirement....blunt edge only.... I bet it wouldn't be all about the Zephyr's. Know what I mean jelly bean?

Comment by Jamie 'gr8rocshot' Ruane on August 30, 2009 at 6:28pm: Yeah that's why I think 22.5 should be the min....that would qualify just about all the Whamo blunt edge molds....except a few 44, 77, 78, 86, etc....If anything, the min size should have been based off the Pluto Platter at 23.3 fer sure...

Comment by JohnnyMax on August 30, 2009 at 5:56pm: Chuck's comments above establish that the min diameter for Superclass is 23.7cm. The Pluto Platter is 23.3cm. Smaller than 40 mold 23.5cm. The 70 mold is too small at 22.5cm. If Pluto Platter is approved (even though it is smaller than Super Class min dia), 40 mold discs should be approved, since they are larger than the Pluto Platter, and closer to the class's min diameter.
