“Travelling Disc Report”

 

The Michigan Experience.  This report is being filed by Mark Ellis, your faithful reporter.  Upon receiving the disc from Tino “Silverback” I contacted Cassidy Mayne, the other Michigan volunteer who evidently designed the unique dye job on the disc, (which, by the way, resembles some humanoid form, maybe even a face) as my instructions were to do so.  As a married guy I know how important it is to follow directions and orders and mild suggestions.

 

Cassidy, being a busy and important guy with a real life (are we sure he is a disc golfer?), could not free up his schedule for a week so I took the disc out to my local courses.  I, of course, had the same concerns as all of you.  Was it safe?  Would the disc bring good luck or ruin?  Was it a curse or a bringer of good karma?  Could the face on the disc see into my soul and judge me worthy or an imposter?  Was Cassidy putting me off so I would be the lab rat, not him?

 

My first experience with the disc was Sunday, October 23^rd, playing in the Kensington Doubles League.  I am relieved to report I survived that experience but you knew that by reading this, unless I have come back as a ghost.  My team cashed but I drew a good partner who carried me, so the experiment wasn’t conclusive.  Maybe the disc was waiting to exert its influence.  Maybe the disc was asleep.  I noted the eyes on the disc never blinked but mystical objects don’t follow the normal rules of the universe.

 

Well now it is a week later and two unexpected things have happened.  Playing Monday with buddies back at Kensington Metropark I threw an ace.  Not a typical ace, mind you.  It was my 11^th ace of the year, tying my highest yearly total of aces.  More unique, it was a backhand ace.  My first backhand ace since I started driving forehand 15 years ago.  Oh, and it was a backhand skip ace, the first backhand skip ace of my career.

I took this as a good sign and paid homage to the Travelling Disc.  It might have smirked at me but if it did it was very quick.

The rest of the week I got out a few times and my game seemed solid.  I made sure the Travelling Disc was kept in an outside putter pocket so the “eyes” had a good view of what was going on.  I casually mentioned to the Traveling Disc that I was registered to play in a Tournament on Saturday and any special luck perhaps should be reserved until then.  No reason to waste it, you know.

So Saturday came and the early indications were not good.  The tournament was at the Goldenrod course in Davison, Michigan.  Unfortunately there was no Pro Grandmasters division (50+), where old guys like me belong.  There was no Masters division (40+) either.  The only division I qualified for was Open where the young and strong and talented play.  Well the Traveling Disc was up to the challenge, or there were enough unnoticed math errors or perhaps mass hallucination or something but the TD ended up handing me the trophy: my first Open victory of the year.  I may have to call Cassidy and tell him he can’t have the disc for a few more days or weeks or months.  Are discs allowed to visit casinos?
