I was a bicycle messenger it San Francisco in the 80's when the book "No One Here Gets Out Alive" hit the stands. I was living in a cold water flat at the corner of Montgomery and Broadway.Over the "Stone" night club. I'd walk the streets of North Beach at night imagining what it was like to know Jim. Listening to the Music on my Walkman.

Actually, JDM got the name from the title of a book written by Aldous Huxley: The Doors of Perception. Huxley did get his title from the famous line above found in William Blake's poem, "The Marriage of Heaven and Hell" (1794). Jim wanted The Doors of Perception as a band name but was shot down--probably due to copyright (Huxley's book was first published in 1954), although I know children fail to find that romantic enough. It is funny, though: Once I grew up and read through Jim's "poetry" again, I realized he was not that talented after all--just a guy obsessed with death, really. Don't belive me? Count how many times death comes up in his works. Not just The Lords and the New Creatures or Wilderness. Get into An American Prayer and keep moving. He was interesting to me during an interesting part of my life, but that was a long time ago. I remember when I became a fan; I was at a party and grabbed a random book off a shelf, flipped it open to page 114 and read a poem about a fellow who had been in an accident. I immediately thought, "Hell, I can write better than that!" I turned to the cover and saw James Douglas Morrison's bearded mug. I knew then that if he could get a book of poetry published posthumously that I should have no trouble writing for people while I was still alive.

Great band, Jim was amazing poet, very smart. I his poetry book "the lords and the new creatures", well I guess two of his books put into one from my understanding.

Have you read "no one gets out of here alive"? great book on his life from childhood to death.

Yes, many of my favorite bands are from that era, most hippie'ish, psychedelic bands I like. What can I say you open the door and it changes your life forever.

Roy it seems you are a psychedelic at heart like me, I grew up in the wrong generation for sure. I've liked or loved many bands of course but never been "into" a band more than The Doors. I absorbed their music, read his poetry and books and adopted his personna for a few years.
