Google Mark Ellis putting clinic. He talks about developing a mantra. My personal mantra is "I make these all the time". I repeat this this a couple of times before I attempt err, make my putt. The most valuable lesson I took from the Ellis clinic was to make initially make all of your practice putts. Whether that occurs at ten or fifteen or however many feet, do it! Do it every day and build your confidence and then extend your range. It does you no good to practice on consistently missing 25 footers!

Well said young obi-wan. Kevin is on to something here I think.

I just keep telling myself "Oh shit please don't airball this 20 footer and roll OB" Does that count for a mantra?

One day I'll make the 20 foot birdie putt on that 600 foot hole. Then it's on like Donkey Kong,

I have been long contemplating this very concept, I seem to have greater physical control when my mental focus is in full. The concept of a mantra is what trancendentalists deem the key to pure consciousness, this realm is where the greatest philisophical discoveries are made. Now what does this have to do with putting... repetition! We all know that practice makes perfect, so if practicing the physical aspect of putting is paired with a mental cue to focus, accuracy, and draining a put we will have all bases covered! It is comparative to the example of telling yourself that there is no tree in the way, or the bush does not exist, but really the intention is to keep your focus as if you are in your back yard practice putting.
So a mantra is a word or phrase that has no definitive meaning to the individual, but it does have a profound physical effect on the body... relaxation. The sum is that doing anything, weather it is disc, your job, or driving a car it will be easily replicated when in a relaxed state!

always ease the mind, like a flowing stream, un-obstructed to flow freely.

As a long time student (well over ten years) of ZEN,
we are taught at the beginning that :

" before you can focus your mind,
you must first focus your breath ! "

Putting should be no different.
