The Community of Disc Golfers and About All Things Disc Golf

We have a new park and a new club. Besides putting together a monthly bagtag and 2 or 3 C-tiers, we are just about ready to start a weekly doubles when DST hits.

What formats seem to work best?
* pro-am pairing or not?
* entry fees, ace pots, club take, plactic for ams??

* Looking to make newbies welcome.
* Hoping to avoid the seemingly inevetable scenario of doubles being an event just for the local diehards. (wow, that sounded opinionated!)
* Remember, this is Tennessee, not TX or NC. Pool of golfers is much smaller.

Here are my opinions on your questions.

pro/am for sure, two ams on the same team getting beat badly by two pros is very discouraging to them. One year, we had the pros play the back tees and ams play the front tees. This made the am play much more important to the team, made them more important, not just "caddying" for their pro.

we are currently at $4 entry, $2 to payout, $1 to ace pot, $1 to club. I think we could raise it $1 easily, when our ace pot got over $300 we were drawing many more players.

when you figure out how to encourage newbies let me know.
Our club is different I think in how we run our leagues.
We used to have a random draw PRO/AM Saturday league but we ran out of people willing to run it.

We also run 2 single format leagues.

Every member pays annual dues of $25 for that you get a t-shirt, a disc and a mini. We are heavily sponsored by Discraft and they have been giving us Prototype discs to give out and get feedback on, for years. We give these out the Wednesday before league starts in an event we call the 1-disc challenge. If you pay your club membership dues this week you get the prototype disc from Discraft. You play a round with that one disc give feedback and Discraft and our club gives out more prizes.
Plus we track your scores award points (we use a program to handle this) and post them to our website. We award trophies for the divisions we offer. Divisions determined based on your average.
We hold social events where we give away more prizes to members. We have a year end party with food and refreshment.
Our membership hovers in the area of 200 players a year. League runs usually 22 weeks. We run 2 separate leagues at 2 separate local parks. You are allowed to play in 1 or both leagues if you wish. So we get pretty good prices on the shirts due to quantity. And of course with our great relationship with Discraft we get really good pricing on plastic as well.

You could start smaller and not have the giveaways unless you can work out a pre-reg system for league, but otherwise how do you know how many items to buy to give away.
