I throw a few latitude 64 discs. Alot of times all that's available are clear opto plastic which is a royal pain to find after a throw. all I'm looking to do is go from clear to an easier to find color. I'm no where near artistic enough to attempt anything cool just want something I can find

ok. here is what you do..
1 box rit powdered dye
4 cups water
1 old pan that is big enough to hold a disc

mix rit and water. pour into pan slowly (dont want to make a mess trust me). Heat on low to low medium heat till it starts to steam. Turn heat off. Lay disc in dye and let sit for 1 min. pull disc out to check for air bubbles. Put disc back in for 10 min. Pull out and check color. If needed darker put back in for a few min. repeat till color you want.
too simple! thank you for the info i'll give it a shot
the only thing i would add to cassidy's steps is that when you take the disc out of the dye wash it really well in cold water.

for a really simple, cool effect:
drizzle some plain old white glue (like elmer's) over the disc. and allow it to dry completely before you place the disc in the dye. try spirals, stripes, zig-zags, no artistic talent needed. The glue comes off cleanly when you wash the disc.
does this work with the liquid dye or just the powder ?
for another cool effect; cut something out of a sticker, put that on the disc, dye, take the sticker off and wala, ytou made your first dye job... ;-)
