The Community of Disc Golfers and About All Things Disc Golf
Finally after all the years of hype, I made my way to Round Rock to compete in the Texas Women's Championships! This is their 5th year running, and from the very first year I heard all good things about this event. I finally made my way there to witness it for myself.
From the players meeting to the final awards it was evident that catering to the women was their main focus. You could see the smiles on all the ladies faces to prove that they had accomplished a job well done.
The Top 10 Things That Made This Event Great!
#10. Player’s Packs! They stuffed these packs with goodies and coupons of TWC sponsors and supporters. This gave us a chance to give back to these companies that gave us support through the weekend.
#9. Lunches were off the charts delicious! It was so convenient to not to worry about lunches between rounds. This also gave us women a chance to mingle with the other divisions and enjoy each other’s company aside from the round.
#8. Snack Tents! Local clubs around the Round Rock area came out and set up tents with snacks, drinks, and raffle tickets every round. They showed their enthusiasm and encouragement for women in disc golf! I definitely looked forward to these tents during those rounds!
#7. This brings me to the support of Local Clubs! Although there were other tournaments in the area, these men in these local clubs came out to support us women! You guys ROCK!
#6. It was Awesome to see all the Women’s Leagues all over Texas as well! Starting this women’s leagues is an easier transition to encourage women to start competing. Going from casual play to tournaments is a huge leap, but getting them into a more competitive fun mode by introducing them to other women is a good step.
#5. Word of Mouth! The whole reason I came to this event was all the great things I had heard about this event. It is not only up to the tournament directors to get their tournament marketed, it is also a responsibility of our own to encourage our competitors. Get the word out about tournaments you may be playing, and encourage other women to come along. This makes the trip worthwhile knowing that there will actually be competition.. Am I right ladies?
#4. Support a good cause! All weeklong the tournament donated $1 for every birdie taken during the tournament! It was just another way to make playing and competing fun. Knowing that your birdie made a difference to a good cause is an awesome thing, and getting that birdie to lower your score is the icing on the cake. :o)
#3. Juniors! Not only are the clubs supporting the women in this area, it is obvious that they are encouraging to their Juniors as well! It was soo awesome to see all these young girls out there playing and having a blast!! DiscNation also paid the way to all the Juniors that wanted to play- So Generous but so effective, They’ve got the numbers to prove it!
All the pros and spectators were on looking and cheering them in before our round began. Here’s an awesome picture of Zoe Justice after she canned a 15fter on her last hole of the tournament! Way to Go Zoe!
#2. Vinnie Miller in a Dress! After setting a number of participant goals every year, they finally won the bet which forced the TD, Vinnie Miller, to slip on a slinky flowered skirt. He proceeded to do the awards and bared the heckling from all. But skirt or no skirt you can see how proud he was of the accomplishment his tournament had done! It takes a real man to organize a group of 79 ladies and smoothly run an event like this. Congrats to Vinnie and the Staff!
#1. Women! Obviously, without our attendance this event wouldn’t be possible! Props to all the ladies that represented in the area, as well as all of us out of towners! It is well worth the trip to come to Women events. The only way we will grow is if we come out and represent! Show these tournaments that you believe as much as they do in Women and Disc Golf by coming out to their tournaments!
Another great tournament to mark down in the record books! Congrats to all the winners and see you all at USWDGCS!!
