Physical Disabilities and My Intent to Get Better

While playing a casual round on Thursday, I felt my elbow do something weird. Hurt like heck for the rest of the match. My loving GF Nikki is a physical therapist, and she diagnosed me as having loose tendons in my right arm. Nothing I can do to strengthen them or make them tighter, so guess what ? I have to give up golfing with my right arm. Son of a BITCH. This sucks, it totally does. But it does afford an opportunity to train my left arm correctly. I already write left handed, so my hand has… Continue

The obsession continues.

Even though I am strapped for cash, I didn't even hesitate getting out my checkbook to buy a new groove last night. It's nice, my first ever first run. 171g Champion Groove in bright orange. Looks really nice in my bag. I also got my first ever disc golf teeshirt. It's a little tight, but as most of you know, I am losing weight every day. Keep checking in with my blog to see how my life is going !!

Jon, you inquired:

Hey Mark, I know you get a lot of requests for forehand shots, but hopefully mine is fairly simple. I throw a flick forehand and it tends to stall out and die hard to the right. If I go less stable, I flip it over and it goes left (this just seems weird to me). Any ideas ? Do i need to increase my arm speed ? My snap ? Thanks Mark.

Jon,
The problem is likely your angle of release. Whatever degree of power and snap you have is what you have to work with. Your power will only change slowly and gradually so don't worry about that. Work on controlling what you have.

In your perception the difference between how you throw the shots which hyzer and the shots which anhyzer is very small. With practice you will learn to throw somewhere between the two and learn to differentiate them.

Forehands have a small margin of error, so tiny changes in the angle of release result in big changes in the flight pattern. Start with whatever disc you are best at making fly flat and straight during the flight (don't worry about the bend at the end of the flight at this point). Just try to throw it flat and straight. Don't worry about how far it goes or if it is on the exact line you want:just flat and straight.

Once you release a shot, good or bad, watch what it does and think about what you did to create that flight. Once you throw a good shot you will notice that your release was flat and your balance was good (the disc never lies). Pause for a moment to memorize what you did. You need to develop muscle memory to repeat this as needed.

As you develop the ability to throw flat and straight you will start to notice small differences in what you do that create slight hyzers or anhyzers. Most shots you want during a round are basically flat and straight with small variations that impact how the disc finishes. Good luck.

Hey, Jon -

What's happening in Mt Pleasant? Let me know if anything's happening on the broadcast front. I've got a line on a contact in the area and am wondering whether I should call or not. Hope all is well, I know there's a new course in the area so that should be sweet.

Hey, Jon -

No sign of any DGL broadcasts on the MAC3 website. Lots of LaRouche but no disc golf on the schedule. With the new courses in the ground, some extra pub on TV might go a long way (esp. with the Northern Waters series listed in epi 30 calendar segment).

Drop me a line if you get anything going (or find someone who wants to) and I'll add you back on to ye olde mailing list.

Take care,

Joe

Hey Jon,
Thanks for the eye. I would be pleased to visit your new course. Design it with as much variance as you can.
