Thursday (8/7/08) I went out to Hudson Mills for a fun day with my 4 year old son, Ethan, and 2 year old Olivia. Ethan was excited to be bringing his new DGA bag! Initially I was thinking about playing the original course but I decided to ask Ethan which course he wanted to play.......what four year old wouldn't prefer to play a course by the name of "the monster"...... I decided short tees would be tiring enough for their little legs.
the round started solidly with four birdies on… Continue

Thanks again, Ray and Beth.
Today I played these first two rounds with Ray, then took off southwest towards the Ocean to play the last two. The temperature dropped 20 degrees in half an hour as I got closer to the water! It was cold enough to give me goosebumps.
Eugene, OR- Westmoreland:
Nice land for disc golf if not a bit lacking in trees. Good length, a few short gimmies but a few more in the 280-350' range. Some small hills around the park are often used. Holes… Continue

Went to the Detroit airport this afternoon and picked up Garret Gurthie and his caddy, Steve McNeill. They're staying with us tonight and we're driving them with us - in two cars - to Kalamazoo tomorrow, for Worlds. Picked them up in Clifford the Big Red Truck and then moved into Cliffy the 1963 Corvair convertible and drove to Bandemer Park for a quick 9 holes.
It was fun watching a 1020+ rated pro pick apart the holes!
On the way back from Bandemer a thunderstorm moved… Continue

Well, yesterday, I played disc golf in Peru again at my all time favorite course, Honeybear 9/10 ;)
I was hoping to play Pieradise so the first time I play it isn't for the ace race, but oh well.
I played a round of 18 at our local course, really tryin to work on the s-curve, it has definitely added some distance to my drive. I also was able to turn over a shot real heard and get it up on the hill on our hole 8, really nasty hole...And on the longer 200+ drives I've been… Continue

I am staying at their place tonight, they showed me around the last 2 rounds.
Albany, OR- Bryant:
Half in a typical park setting of flat grassy areas bordered by park roads, spaced out trees. 2 holes along a river, to get wet you have to fight through tall nasty blackberry bushes. The other half was recently bulldozed out of thick woods, lots of thorns, bugs, spiders. It's hardly playable, and even harder to believe there was a tournament there last weekend. Unclean fairways as… Continue

So we arrived into Boston after returning from Sweden where we spent the last two weeks on the EuroTour. The Swedish tournaments were amazing and had some consistent finishes in both the Stockholm Open (5th) and the Scandinavian Open (4th). Our good friend Tim Walsh picked us up and provided us with a place to stay with his family throughout the… Continue

Ever wonder what a disc golf course would look like after an F-2 tornado hits it? ...wonder no more...
The course at Riverside Park in Hammond, Indiana got a direct hit Monday night. The tornado wiped out my local power grid except for my cable. I am currently powered by a generator and anticipate the same for a few more days.
I posted some pics in the picture galleries from my crawl through the course earlier today at the web site below and will add more as time and gas… Continue

I played Tuesday Twos
and had a blast, as usual. The weather was about 100 degrees when I got there, and I was seriously gassed after a practice round. It took about 20 minutes to catch my breath, but was ready to go by the time we started and I didn't really have any trouble after that.
It's supposed to be hot again - I'll probably pass on playing at lunch.

I will not get to Kalamazoo until just before the Players meeting ends. I am going to my brother in law's wedding on the west coast this weekend and then leaving early Sunday morning (to my family's chagrin) to catch a plane for Chicago where my car and my gear will be waiting. I am going to play the courses blind. I have played about a dozen or so holes from the shorts at Osthtemo about a year ago and that's about it. I am not worried. I will read the course book that I expect to get in the… Continue

Oddly enough, I haven't been playing as many tournaments as I would have imagined with 6 months off work. I played the Master's Cup in May and then nothing until the Frying Pan a couple weeks ago. I wasn't particularly happy with my game in either tournament -- actually, I haven't been particularly happy with any of my tournament results in 2008.
I think the main thing this year, is now that I'm playing pro masters, I've got somewhat unrealistic expectations. Instead of taking my… Continue

Today we just chilled all day, ate, cleaned up, packed, then played doubles at Timber Park which I've already played. Also played a few holes at Milo because someone found Eric's disc and returned it to him there today. I got a new player as a partner and we did not cash, my fault. He is really good for 1.5 months..already throwing 325' and getting it to curve the way he wants, impressive.
We also went to DISC GOLF DEPOT in Portland, Oregon for some cheap… Continue

Well, I've got 2 things to blog about, I'll start out with doubles.
Today, I played doubles at my home course, Highland Park in Kokomo,Indiana. 8/10 course, not too difficult, but not too easy. Nothing really spectacular, 1 over 500, rest are 200-350, something like that.
Well I drew the club leader as my partner, yay me! My first drive was on my usual route, 240 or 250 around a couple trees, basket is 65 or 55 feet away. Well, we still took my partners drive, had me by about 20… Continue

Finally got my first ace tonight, after about 4 years of playing. It was on hole 1 at Slumberland Disc Golf Course in Watertown South Dakota. 251 ft. I used a 172 gram ESP Surge. I was with 2 other people. One of them was my brother, who just got his first ace 2 days prior to mine. What a feeling.

Going on my own little mini tour this year, for the first time ever, turned out to be such a great experience! I spent time with lots of amazing people! Jordan Rausch, thanks so much for inviting me to stay for the Brent Hambrick! You and your family were excellent hosts and I loved having my own room! :) Thanks to Erin Oakley and Jonna Munschy in Lansing, Michigan! You two ladies made that one of the best weeks I've had in a long time! Steve and Misty Dodge in Leicester, Massachusettes, were… Continue

at the Top course in not just the Northwest, but of this entire leg of the trip (not including Idlewild), beating out anything from Ohio across to Kansas, up to North Dakota, over to Montana and finally Oregon.
Special thanks to Eric Mathias for the few nights hook up and the rounds there today, and the disc, and breakfast.
I tore it apart the first round, shooting 83 (27 holes, course par something like 89/90-long tees to long pins). Probably played the best round overall… Continue

Just got back from a full weekend of golf in Albany. Got a little beat up (lots of new blackberry scratches), and am really tired, but I had a great time.
I left early on Friday to practice a couple of the courses - specifically Bryant and Waterloo. Arrived at Bryant around 9:00, and by 9:15 I was about to give up and try later. Bryant Park has 18 holes - I think there are about 15 baskets and 3 tone poles, and all are not numbered. There are no signs or teepads.… Continue

I went to the lower michigan area for the weekend and played 2 courses...they were surprisingly...bad...
I'm now giving 1-10/10 rating for courses
First course I played was in Bridgman. It was a little 9 hill course that we could play and then get back on the road right? WRONG. This course was quite annoying for its design. Not very friendly to backhand players, so my father had the upper hand. On hole 2, I believe, there was a line of trees to the right of the teepad, so… Continue

I'm not truly certain where to begin. I had a ridiculous weekend. Friday I came out early in the morning and shot par golf on the Great Blue Heron Disc Golf Course in a practice round with Evan and Deuce. Played another round later with Steve Mills, Gregg Barsby, Cory Sharp, and Chris Addiego which was pretty much laid back as it could get, lots of just gunning drives on holes until they figured out their lines on a new course. Definitely could tell right off that it wasn't going to be an easy… Continue

So far I'm not too impressed by Oregon courses. Not many really bad, just most kinda rough/hard to navigate/less than 18 holes/not challenging. I also haven't played the top rated ones yet however, Milo, Whistler's Bend, etc.
Salem, OR- Cascades Gateway:
Fairly open in large fields, with some patches of trees, and a few holes along edges of woods. Thick nasty blackberry bushes could ruin your day on a bad shot on a few holes. 2 holes play close enough to a lake to get wet. Flat… Continue
