not from throwing discs (I wish), but from wringing out tie-dye t-shirts. We're dying the shirts that will be part of the player's pack for a little fundraiser tournament on Labor Day. AJ, April and I did the tying on this most recent batch of 20 shirts and AJ and I applied the dye. We let the shirts sit for 48 hours which helps the dye really set in and get colorful. But yesterday I was on my own to rinse out the shirts, wash'em, dry'em and fold'em. Rinsing is a big task, as you have to rise… Continue

A big thanks to everyone who came out to the San Marcos Ice Bowl at Montiel Park on Saturday, January 17th. We had a full field of 54 players on a beautiful day, including players from Arizona, Nebraska, Missouri and Sweden by way of Las Vegas. Tony Ferro - there's a Montiel Park-stamped #2 Upshot on the way to you for being both the first entrant and the longest traveller (Tony already uses a #2 Upshot for his fantastic hyzer-flip putter drives).
Scores have been posted on pdga.com,… Continue

The Montiel Park Ace Race is just a little over a week away, and the player's packs have been ordered and are in the hands of the brown crew at UPS. I created a little Google Map to follow the progress of the shipment and have tried to embed it in this blog post, but I can't seem to get my Google Maps to show up either in my blog posts or my "User Box." Rats.…

The Ace Race is just over three weeks away, and the big news is that WE NEED MORE ENTRANTS!!!!!!!
When is it?
- Sunday, Oct 5 from 10am to 4pm - actually, you can play your 36 holes as quickly as you want and leave to do other stuff if need be - it's up to you. Or you can come late and cram in your 36 holes starting at say, 1pm. Your choice.
What does it cost?
$25 - And for $25 bucks you get two new proto-type Discraft discs, a hat and a mini. The… Continue

I have spent the last few days getting caught up on my mapping of the two most interesting disc golf tours going on this summer (at least as far as I know...)
Where Ben's Been Map #1

Many of you have seen the Google maps that I have been working on to display Ben Calhoun's disc golf roadtrip. Well, my old friend Gregg Hosfeld heard about Ben's trip and decided that HE needed to be the first person to play 1,000 courses. Gregg has been playing since the late 1970's (when there weren't very many courses) and to date has played over 800 different disc golf courses. Back when I published the first Course Directory back in 1985, Gregg was one of the best sources of… Continue

I'm a bit bummed - I typed up a post yesterday about Day 1 but it somehow didn't get saved. I hate when that happens!!!
We started our trip flying a redeye Friday night (July 4th) from San Diego to Chicago, then from Chicago to Syracuse. Monica helped me out bigtime by driving us to the airport on the 4th. We checked in just befor 9pm for our 10:50p flight. We were about to go through security when one of the ticket agents caught us and said:wait before you go through security - it's… Continue

I'm about to go on vacation for 11 days, 4 of which will comprise the 2008 Tour de Rizbee. For each of the past four years my son and I have done a disc golf road trip where we drive like crazy and play lots of disc golf (www.teamrizbee.com). Last year's trip covered 21 days, 60 courses, 1,000 holes, and 11 states. This year's trip is much shorter but should be pretty exciting. My daughter is joining us this year, and since she's not as interested in disc golf we'll be doing some other… Continue

Our household got a Wii last Christmas, and we've been playing it off and on since then. Super Mario Galaxy, The Simpsons and Guitar Hero are great, but we seem to play Wii Sports the most, particularly the golf game. Rizbee Jr. just set a milestone last night - he aced hole #2 while playing in Expert mode.
One of the cool things about the Wii is that you can create your own character, or Mii. We've created Mii's that (sort of) look like each… Continue

A.J., Ryan and I headed up to O.C. for a lille mini-tour yesterday. We were accompanied by Katie and one of her friends, who were probably the MVP's of the trip because they were such good sports. We stopped first at Deerfield Community Park in Irvine, which none of us had played before. Good use of park space - 3 baskets that are used twice and 6 light poles each used twice. We played a "4-disc challenge," leaving most of our bags' contents in the truck. Ryan hadn't seen a course like this -… Continue

Here's the final results from the "How Many" survey. The survey was completed by 120 disc golfers. As you can see from the chart above, most of the golfers who responded have played a lot of different courses since they started playing disc golf. The median number of courses played was 30, so half of the golfers surveyed had played less than 30 courses and half had played 30 or more. There are some real road warriors out there, as nearly one-in-five… Continue

OK, I received quite a few more responses to the survey - the count is now up to 102 respondents. The responses have shifted a bit more towards the "traveller" group and not so much towards the "road warrior" group, although the majority have played more than 25 courses. The average number of courses played is 30. Fewer than 20 percent (15.7%) of the respondents reported playing ten or fewer courses, slightly less than a third (31.4%) said they… Continue

A few days ago I posted a blog entry asking people to fill out my "How Many Courses Have You Played" survey. I also sent out a message to my friends on this site (about 100) with the link to the survey. So far there have been 35 responses, so I thought I'd post some preliminary results.
As you can see by the pie chart, fewer than 20 percent of the players who responded said they had played ten or fewer courses in their career (Two had only played… Continue

This is a question that has always interested me - how many different courses have people played? I put together a quick, three question survey at this location: How Many? Survey
Do most avid disc golfers play the same course over and over and over? Or do they like to try out new sets of trees to hit and baskets to bouce out of? Once I get a decent number of responses I'll post some results.

I spent a few days last week with Monica, travelling from San Diego to Des Moines by way of Chicago. Aside from all the rain we had a good trip, and we were headed back early Sunday morning, booked on a 6:05 flight out of O-Hare.
We got up at 4am, expecting that would be early enough to make our flight since we stayed at a Holiday Inn Express right next to the airport. Monica checked us out at about 4:30 and I went out to the parking lot to… Continue

I still like to look at the PDGA message board to find discussions on disc golf issues - I think the organization of the threads and posts is a little easier for me to follow than on this site. But sometimes I come across the silliest, most absurd discussions on that MB, and I truly wonder about the sanity of those who participate.
Today's case in point: Relief from a… Continue

It's just plain wrong. I really don't want to hear their conversation while I'm in there, and do they think the person on the other end of the line will enjoy the sounds of flushing, etc.? Just plain wrong...

Alright, this isn't about disc golf, but then not everything on this site is about disc golf, so there. While I'm at work I usually drink water (actually a mixture of bottled water and carbonated, sugar-fee, flavored water, but that's probably TMI...), but every now and then I feel like drinking something else. I mean, sometimes I need a little jolt of caffiene or sugar to get through the day. Anyway, when the spirit moves me I make use of one of the two vending machines just outside of the… Continue
