Loose change...

The year was 2000 and the first ever Amateur-AND-Professional Disc Golf Championship was being held in the Ann Arbor area of Michigan. During such events, there are many various contests and prize giveaways for contestants and spectators alike, and this was no exception. One such event had a basket to giveaway and, for only $1 per shot, persons making an est. 90' putt would qualify for a later, final shoot out for the prize.

At that time, Hudson Mills had added another 24 hole course… Continue

Lucky shot...

I believe that the year was 2000. I had been planning on visiting a friend of mine, John Mick, in the Kalamazoo area to then road trip up to the Brewer disc golf course in Grand Rapids for a summer tournament. This had been in the works for a while yet, come tournament weekend, I was having issues with one of my knees and would not be able to compete. But I made the trip nonetheless, and so the story begins...

In Grand Rapids I spent the first round walking with the Am-1 group in… Continue

My first MDGO final...

In 1999 I traveled with two buddies, John and Guido, to Ludington, Michigan to play in my first ever Michigan Disc Golf Organization (MDGO) finals. We had driven up early, planning on playing in the "Mace Man" doubles event that (Friday) afternoon. First, however, I found Lake Michigan and relaxed for a while after a long drive.

Anyway, we arrived in time to warm up and pay $10 to play in the doubles event. If I had to guess, I'd say that there were 20-24 players (10-12 teams) in… Continue

The trees have ears...

In the summer of 1997 I lived in Kalamazoo, Michigan, though I certainly spent enough time at Coldbrook disc golf course to consider it as my home away from home. One day, having played 3 consecutive rounds alone, I sat in the grass besides the tee pad for hole #1 and rested, searching for the energy to continue into a forth and final round. As I waited and watched a couple of groups go out before me, two teenagers stepped up to throw.

Now, if you've never played Coldbrook before,… Continue

Lost and found...

The year was 1998 and a buddy and I were walking toward our drives on hole #1 at Vista Del Camino (Shelley Sharpe memorial) disc golf course in Scottsdale, Arizona. The pin setting that day was in a difficult spot, just beyond a Palo Verde tree near the canal waters-edge. Just then, we heard a voice calling from the #1 tee pad behind us, asking if he could throw. We waved him on and he launched a monster sidearm spike hyzer, parking the drive within 10' of the basket. As he approached, I… Continue

A Bird of Recall...

During the summer of 1998, a buddy (John Pool, a.k.a., "The Cannon") and I left Phoenix for a week of disc golfing fun in California. We played several courses during this time - as many as we could - and this recollection is from the DeLaveaga course in Santa Cruz, CA.

This was great fun, a beautiful and challenging course with extreme elevation changes and many hazards. We played here for a day-and-a-half, though it was our first round at the course where my story… Continue

My First Ace...

February 23, 1998...Scottsdale, AZ...Vista Del Camino, hole #12 - While shooting a round with David Demery and friends, I was playing well and had the pad going into hole #11. And then, splash! A circle-5 put me to the back of the order coming into hole #12. I was upset. I took out a red, no-name 173 gram Cyclone which I'd found at the edge of the water the day before and, on a 278' pin setting, whipped the shot out of frustration as hard as I could throw it. The disc crashed into the chains… Continue
