Lakewood Dubs

I finally made it out for random dubs at Lakewood last night. Beautiful, shorts wearin' weather! I partnered up with Brian Hayes and we managed to shoot a four down (with a bogie on geezer). We had our chances to score well but still, we ended up pretty far off the ten under winning round (I think that's what it was). There was a little wind at the course but not too bad. Also in my group were Toby Cheff and Scott Hill from OR, all very pleasant company.

Quinn and I were out on an errand up near North Park toward the end of the day yesterday so of course we had to stop in to play a little. First we made a quick stop at Burgermaster for some chow and then we played the front nine at it was getting dark. I hit a couple of crazy long putts when I could barely see the baskets in the fading daylight. Quinn had some highlights too, like a four on hole five and out driving me on a couple of holes. It's nice to see Quinn back in the swing of disc golf… Continue

Solo Round

I made it out to Lakewood yesterday afternoon, trying to beat the rain. Quite a few folks out playing. I decided to play a solo round to try and work on my shots and head game and forego the socializing even though I do enjoy it. I've been throwing the relatively new putter from Revolution called the 1080. I'd compare it to a stiff wizard or beadless aviar although it's got a little different feel to it. I had a couple of putts that I thought were pretty much perfect blow through the back of… Continue

Springlike Day

I had scheduled a Lakewood Club meeting for this evening hoping for a nice day so I could swing by the course and play beforehand. The weather didn't disappoint but before I could play I had to meet with Sam from the parks department about an issue with hole 16. Sam supervises the maintenence at Lakewood and is very disc golf friendly. Unfortunately there is some pressure from above that is asking (requiring?) that the basket on hole 16 be taken out of the wooded area where it now resides. This… Continue

Another beauty day

I spent the better part of the day at the studio grinding on some sculpture pieces and working on a couple of other projects. I headed out to Lakewood in the late afternoon expecting to see lots of cars in the lot since the weather was once again outstanding. Surprisingly there were only a couple of cars and a just a few golfers in sight when I arrived. While I was taking a few warmup putts Leif drove up fresh from a round at Seatac so we decided to head out onto the course together. Leif… Continue

February in Seattle

We've had a week of amazing weather here in Seattle, at least compared to what we often have in February. I didn't get out for DG nearly as much as I would have liked but I did make it out with my seven year old Quinn for nine holes at North Park early in the week. We drove up there to get a little exercise after his weekly violin lesson on Tuesday. Part of the way through our campaign against the front nine Lowell Shields joined us, if for nothing else than to demonstrate how to pick the… Continue

Sweet ACE! at Lakewood

The promise of sunny weather brought 25 golfers to Lakewood for the Feb. Acepot. The day started out chilly but even so you could tell it was going to turn out to be a beautiful day. The $365 in the ace kitty probably encouraged players to show up as well! There was a nice field of 15 Pros, 9 Ams and 1 woman. I decided to run a straight 27 hole format instead of the traditional two rounds of 18. We play the regular 18 hole course and then add holes 1, 2, 3, 5 short, 6, old #11, 12, 17 & 18.… Continue

Introduce a friend to Disc Golf!

A friend from the U.K. (I met him on a ship in Antarctica!) gave me a shout that he was coming to Seattle for a conference this week and wanted to give disc golf a try. I picked him up at his downtown hotel and in 15 minutes we were at Lakewood on the first tee. I brought an assortment of discs in one of my extra bags for him to test drive: understable drivers, mid-ranges and a couple of different putters and we headed out hoping to beat the gathering grey rain clouds. I was pleased to get a… Continue

Terrace Creek

I started feeling a bit cagey this afternoon and decided to head up to Terrace Creek to play 18. It was real windy today with temps in the upper 40s. I played solo until I got to the ninth hole where I caught up with Jub Jub and Jim O'Connor so I joined them for the second half of the round. Even though the skies were cloudy and the wind was gusting there were quite a few people out on the course. I tried to play a 'smart' round and avoid lots of extra strokes by trying to go for everything. I… Continue

NP Acepot

Went out to North Park at around 9:30 this morning for the monthly acepot. Gordy and I ran a 27 hole event so that we could finish in time to get home and watch the superbowl. We played 18 holes and then seeded everyone before playing 9 more (odd # tees). I think there were around 27 players present, which is better than it's been for a while. With around $500 sitting in the acepot I figured there would be some folks out to play. Kind of cloudy and cool all day but no rain to speak of. I ended… Continue

Lakewood today

After a few hours in the studio I decided I needed to get out for a bit of golf so I headed down to Lakewood for a round. Lots of cars in the parking lot when I arrived, good to see. I ended up playing a solo round straight up, no "extra" shots. After eighteen holes I found myself with one bogey (13) and one bird (3). A really flat, even round. Actually kind of nice compared to the rollercoaster rounds I've been having lately. I pulled out my box of assorted discs for sale after the round and… Continue

Sunny day @ LKWD

Bob L. gave me a call just after I got off of my rowing machine to see if I wanted to meet him at Lakewood for a round. With the sun shining and the temp in the mid forties it was too hard to resist. I justified going by combining golf with a run to costco for gas and family provisions. Chuck E. was there too for about nine holes before he had to head off to work. It was a beautiful day to be out. Warm enough to play in just a sweater but frost on the ground in the shaded spots. It's been cold… Continue

LKWD Acepot

I showed up at Lakewood on Sunday morning to run the acepot. With the chilly weather and two big football games on TV I didn't know if anyone would show up or not. As it happened there were eight of us that showed up ready to play so we decided to play 27 holes of doubles instead of the customary two rounds of 18. We each put in $10 and played in one large group. We followed the same format as the 27 hole layout that I put together last summer for the Solstice Acepotapalooza! In the end Gordy… Continue

Two courses today!

I had a bit of business to do down toward the south end today so I decided to swing by SeaTac for a speed round. Started on the back nine and enjoyed playing the course in its winter condition. By that I mean without a lot of foliage. It makes a big difference on the way you see your shot follow a line and how far/close the baskets seem to be from the tee. I was throwing with decent power today but boy was it hard to keep the disc on the right line, my release point was giving me fits. All the… Continue

Made it out to Lakewood for a bit of casual golf on a Friday afternoon. It was a bit chilly but there were a lot of cars in the lot when I got there around 3:30. I played on my own for about 5 holes then caught up with DRC, Getty, Bunny and Steve so I joined them for the remainder of the round. Still feeling pretty rusty from not playing but really happy to be out throwing with friends. Hung out in the parking lot yakking about politics until Sue drove up to kick everyone out.

New Years Day

I got out to North Park on Jan. 1 for a little casual golf. Saw a gaggle of the regulars there of course and played a round of random doubles on the front nine for two bucks a head. I got partnered with a guy named Miki that I hadn't met before. Played a typical North Park round and ended up with a rather dismal one or two under. Winners were at five I think. Fun time though and always great to be out on New Years Day throwing a disc.

The end of 2007

Played the Freeze in the Trees up at the Lake Stevens course on December 29th. Enjoyed sharing the drive up with Ken Smith. Hadn't thrown a disc in about a month so it was great to be out tossing again. I love playing in the big trees at this course. I ended up winning a ten dollar CTP and then finished tied for last cash. Would have been happy to split the twenty but the other guy got cujoled by the crowd at tourney central into playing off for it and I ended up winning the playoff. Nice to… Continue
