"He claims to dream about swimming every night. When awake he visualizes going through his butterfly stroke as he walks, and when he gets to the door he reaches for it like it's the pool wall and he is about to make a turn. 'I find myself doing some unusual things that might make me appear like I belong in a mental institution,' he says."
-Milorad Cavic, Sports Illustrated.
This quote really caught my eye, because this is the way I feel about disc golf. I'll be walking… Continue

Its that time of year again. Time for me to seem like a certifiable idiot. The last time I wrote a significant blog update here, about my game, was early August and following my win at the Kingston Open. Its actually been a pretty eventful set of months since then. I won another one, at Rolling Hills in September. I've taken a lot of 2nd place finishes, including a tie for 2nd at a B-Tier in Upper Sandusky. Just recently I played a pair of C-Tiers, the Bark at the Moon in Temperance and the… Continue

So, I was looking at my ace count on here and I realized that it didn't look completely accurate. To be specific I hadn't yet added the last couple of aces and it took me a few minutes to remember the specifics concerning each of them. I figured I'd do a quick reminisce here while I blast some Tea Leaf Green (thank you DGTV for that recommendation).
Hole 12 - Parmalee Park - June 2005
At the inaugural Parmalee Park Doubles I threw a high anhyzer with a beat to hell DX… Continue

So, I found another protégé on Sunday. That'd be the third. Really, the second... Evan has moved on as the summer has gone by, playing 980+ golf since the end of July (Freedom Flight, Kingston Open, Falcon Fall Classic). After Freedom Flight I started working with Nick Gray, who has only been playing since June. On Sunday I played some golf with Alex Gilson who has been playing since last December. So far, I feel like I'm doing a good job of identifying new players with some talent in the area… Continue

So, I played Winthrop Gold last year during the spectator round. This year I won't even have the chance to make it down for that... but based on the caddy book and what I did last year, and how my game (specifically: my forehand) has progressed this year, here's how I'd probably play Winthrop this year...
1. Challenger backhand, putt
2. XCaliber forehand, Firebird forehand, putt
3. XCaliber forehand, putt
4. Firebird forehand, Firebird spike hyzer, putt

Wow, this has been refreshing. I last played a tournament on August 2/3 in Norwalk. Next tournament isn't for another week, the Falcon Fall Classic on August 23 in Bowling Green, Ohio. This has been the longest stretch without a tournament for me since... Probably somewhere between January and February. It has been a very busy spring/summer for me in terms of tournaments, and I've seen a lot of growth. Right now I'm down to probably one large tournament, maybe two. Other than that it'll all be… Continue

I'm not truly certain where to begin. I had a ridiculous weekend. Friday I came out early in the morning and shot par golf on the Great Blue Heron Disc Golf Course in a practice round with Evan and Deuce. Played another round later with Steve Mills, Gregg Barsby, Cory Sharp, and Chris Addiego which was pretty much laid back as it could get, lots of just gunning drives on holes until they figured out their lines on a new course. Definitely could tell right off that it wasn't going to be an easy… Continue

The title of the blog post says it all. I managed to pull off a $50 cash at the Freedom Flight, last cash spot. Unfortunately the way I went about it was kind of crummy. I played a horrible first round, but came around at the end of the second round to pull it off.
First round started off alright with a 30 foot putt to save par on the 490 foot hole 2. I slipped on the pad on the next hole, throwing out of bounds. Had to hit another 30 footer to save bogey. Two holes later had to hit… Continue

I played in my second Brent Hambrick Memorial Open this year. I have to start by saying that Paul Jay and the rest of the staff did a fantastic job with the tournament. Everything they did was top notch, and it was a great example of how a tournament should be run. It was great from the check in through the awards ceremony. The courses were in fantastic shape, the players party was a blast (food was amazing and you can't not love inexpensive alcohol).
Congratulations is in order for… Continue

So, 990 rated golf wasn't enough in my first tournament after deciding I was done with the amateur fields. I failed to cash by a stroke and walked away with a wry grin. The thing about that event was that I played absolutely terrible golf, with eleven bogey strokes, most of them unnecessary OB strokes. I felt comfortable, like I belonged in the division. This was completely different from my experience as a trophy only player through the first months of the year (and the last month of… Continue

So today I played my first Open sanctioned event. I'm officially done with the Advanced ranks so I'm willing to try to get some cash and accept now. Overall I guess I played some pretty good golf, I came away with 988 and 989 rated rounds on the day. Unfortunately that wasn't good enough to cash at the C-Tier I went to in Columbus. I managed 9th of 20, one stroke out of the cash. Some great players showed up including 7of Ohio's top 10 players plus Barry Schultz. It was the Discraft Westside… Continue

Before I start anything huge congratulations to everyone who cashed, huge thanks to everyone who came from out of state to check out this primo event, and more congratulations to those who beat me. Daemon Stahlin played some out of his mind awesome disc golf to win the Amateur National Championship, 53 is unbelievable. Mark Roberts was by far the most consistent out of the top three finishers and deserved his second place finish, f'sho.
A week or so ago I posted on my blog that my… Continue

Gotta say I'd forgotten how much I love the Toboggan. This is a course that I have been waiting for 11 months to see back in the ground, and I still hadn't remembered just how awesome it is to play. Went out today and helped them piece together the baskets in the morning and once they were all in we went and played some singles rounds. I went on the trip with Kyle Lehman, Evan Hughes, Steve Swartz, Rob Fitzsimmons and Rob's dog Lahar.
First round I had a decent and consistent start.… Continue

Minimal disc golf in this post. With Amateur Nationals coming up in less than two short weeks, just over a week really before the player's meeting/banquet on Thursday night, I figured I'd take a few days away from the game to recharge myself a little bit mentally. I did do some throwing yesterday just to keep myself from slipping too much and had a great throw on one of them. Stood at the back of one end zone with a 10mph tailwind and threw a disc out 46 yards past the back of the end zone on… Continue

I'd like to thank the reason I won advanced yesterday at the 11th Annual Ottawa Park Open. No, I'm not thanking my sponsor (although this now merits a completely unnecessary plug: http://www.poorboydiscs.com/ ha!) and I'm not thanking any of my discs (although the XCaliber was CLUTCH all day long)... I'd like to thank Chipotle.
In between rounds myself and a few friends went to Chipotle. Got myself a massively overloaded steak fajita burrito and ate about 75% of it on the way back to… Continue

So far so good... I guess I am rounding into form at the right time. I was kind of worried that Thrills at the Mills (1022/985) would be a one time thing, just hot for one tournament and thats it. But good play at the doubles event last weekend and now this weekend are real confidence builders. Today I managed to pull off the win at the 11th Annual Ottawa Park Open here in Toledo. In April at the Spring Hyzer I placed well there for the first time since my days in Intermediate (read: December… Continue

So far May has been a fantastic month for me. Or at least it has come out solid after a somewhat slow start. Played mediocre to poor golf at Loco at the Mills, then played badly at the Parklane Drive Open. But after Parklane I won the Pro/Adv Putting Contest. Followed up that by hitting up Thrills at the Mills and winning Advanced with a 1022/985 split and a win in a playoff. But the most bizarre thing of the month has to be this past weekend...
Went to Norwalk, Ohio with Chris Hoyle… Continue

I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I've played tournaments every weekend since March 1st, and I'm still waiting for ideal conditions. I know you can't have perfect weather every weekend, but I haven't had low winds, warm weather, and solid teepads yet. Not once. We're talking 11 weekends in a row, going on 12 here. It has either been 20+ mile per hour winds, rain, or as was the case this past weekend: teepads made of mudslicks.
I might play two tournaments this weekend. I'm playing… Continue

All good things must come to an end, eh? I wasn't going to post on this because I didn't want to jinx it by talking about it. Over the past two-plus weeks I probably had my best run of random draw doubles play ever. I played in six locals and at minimum tied for first during the round in every single one of them.
Ottawa Park - Short Tees
Partner Chris Hoyle: -13, t1st (lost in playoff)
Ottawa Park - Long Tees
Partner Chris Hoyle: -12, 1st

Good times. Sort of. I'm not really playing very well, contrary to the progress of my rating. Interestingly enough my rating bumped from 954 to 961 with the update at the beginning of this week. That is actually contrary to the level of golf I have played thus far in 2008. Since the last update I have played golf at a 959 level. My rating actually only went up because of the elimination of poor rounds played in 2007, not the addition of hot rounds played in 2008.
I don't remember… Continue
