So, I was kind of hesitant to post on this because you hear a lot about "message board distance" or what people say online that they can throw, which is usually a total exaggeration. I know that there was a time when I was doing that, when I thought I could throw over 400 feet but I probably was only getting 375 with regularity. Well last year I was finally getting myself up to 420+ on the occasional pop. It wasn't consistent but if I threw it up there *just right* I could get… Continue

So I got up this morning, looked outside, and the world was pleasant. The ground appeared to be drying and things looked pretty calm out. That was solid. We went out to Carter Park in Bowling Green, Ohio. Myself, Justin Smith, and Justin Gill. Met Pat Burke out there. Basically it was all to get a practice round in for the Falcon Thaw tomorrow morning. When we teed off there was a very light breeze and the ground appeared to be drying.
By the time we hit hole… Continue

On Saturday afternoon I played on the best card I've ever played on. Bar none. It was more exciting than any round thus far in my short discing lifespan. It was filled with huge putts, huge saves, and all around incredibly exciting golf. The best part was the generally great attitude by all of the guys on the card. I played the second round of the March Madness C-Tier at the Brent Hambrick Memorial DGC in Columbus, Ohio with Aaron Trimmer, Jon Allen, and Ryan Bohardt. Ryan wasn't a part of the… Continue

So this weekend was kind of all about losing. It definitely didn't go all that amazing for me on the whole. I played at the Crosstown Classic in Royal Oak, Michigan. It is an unsanctioned tournament that usually takes place at both Wagner & Starr Park but due to flooding and freezing Starr was unplayable so it was two rounds at Wagner. I'd never played the course before, and playing it blind went surprisingly well as I shot a 4 under 50 and sat two strokes behind Brad Frase for first, two… Continue

So in January I played an unsanctioned tournament at the Hambrick Memorial Course in Columbus, Ohio. I played in the Open Division and thanks to a ridiculous first round I tied for 1st with Geoff Bennett before losing in a three hole playoff. I'm going back to that same course, in all likelihood on March 15 to play the March Madness C-Tier. Due to the cost of the Open Division at this lil C-Tier ($57) I will be playing Advanced ($37). There's been a minor tiff on the Columbus boards about it.… Continue

I suppose I can't complain about cash, but what a horrible pair of rounds today. I'm honestly pretty shocked that I came away from today's unsanctioned March Meltdown with last cash. I finished behind, in order: Mark Ellis, Mike Raley, Brooke Plantz, and Trevor Thorpe. During the first round I had a stretch where I went 5-5-4-4 (to add insult to injury my worn old jeans tore in the crotch on the fourth hole of that string, I had to stop and laugh at myself when it happened, I think that… Continue

Right now I've got a tentative tournament schedule laid out for the next two months. It is completely loaded, thus far. The only question really concerns money. I've got enough, but I'm also going to have to pay for my passport to get ready for my summer trip to Spain this year. I am already pre-registered for BG Ams though, so thats money already spent, no need to budget for it in my current account.
March Madness - C Tier - Columbus, Ohio

So I've been pretty much failing as a blogger since the start of February. Only a few as the semester has picked up. Right now I'm pretty much just trying to live life and maintain my responsibilities. I do consider, unlike many people, disc golf a responsibility that I need to maintain time for. I actually did take a short week and a half vacation from the game but got right back on top of things a week before the Vienna Park Ice Bowl.
So thats where I'll start... I was playing… Continue

I think I'm starting to cement a reputation locally. Everybody around here has some sort of reputation, at least at the Advanced-on-up level, for being good at some particular part of the game. Maybe it's like that in other areas as well. Around here Dave O'Shea has the reputation for having the best forehand. Chris Hoyle is the best player, period. Steve Lopez is the most streaky (and when he's on, he's on
). Jamie Whitehead has the flashiest game, with eye-popping distance and those… Continue

Right now we're looking at 29 degree high, 60% precipitation, intermittent flurries and snow showers. Primarily in the AM. We're looking at a tee-time temperature of 23 with a wind-chill bringing it down to 14 degrees. Figured I'd elaborate a little on how my bag looks right now since it seems like that's a popular blog topic of late, and my bag has been very interesting in how it has been used of late, at least to me. I'm definitely changing my tendencies off the teepad.High Speed… Continue

Dreams are weird. You need to get them down right away, or else you forget them, right? Maybe. Anyway I'm just going to go over the tiny bits I remember...
We were walking between holes at the Toboggan course, between hole three and four and we came on a new hole. The hole was about 330, had an immediate ridge in front of the teepad you couldn't see over (similar to hole three at Norwalk, Ohio for those that are local) and then played over a reservoir to a postage stamp green,… Continue

So, like I said in the previous blog post I went down to Columbus with Ziggy Bierekoven and Geoff Bennett for the Columbus Ice Bowl at the Hambrick Memorial Course at Hoover. It was a solid event, but the real fun was the night before the tournament to be honest. We stayed at Jordan Rauch's place. We played putting games in the basement nonstop. Jordan has an area that allows for up to 45 foot putts, I think the longest we bothered with were 35 footers. We did everything weird we could, from… Continue

More money, more problems? Not when you're damn near broke it ain't! So far I'm two tournaments into 2008, and 19 days in... I'm up to $210 in unsanctioned tournament earnings. It isn't much, but its a start. I took second today at the Columbus Ice Bowl, at the Hambrick Memorial Course. I actually tied for first with Geoff Bennett and lost in a sudden death tiebreaker. He got $100, I got $60. Sucks that I lost it, I was actually in with a strong lead after one round, he had the hot round by, I… Continue

Two topics I hadn't anticipated covering in conjunction here... Mainly because I don't like writing about myself and my life for creative writing purposes. I don't mind writing about my own life as a log, but in terms of creative writing: it is really frustrating. I backed myself into this one, though. We were asked, for my Creative Writing course, to describe a recent event. Naturally I chose to describe the tournament I played in on the first. I did this without knowing that our next job… Continue

Not much to blog about... just the frustration inevitable with winter field work. Stupid decision of the day, doing field work in a couple of inches of snow near dusk. I'm down a couple of distance drivers. I think I've got a pretty good bead on the Destroyer, and if I don't find it I have a backup waiting... but it is annoying. I'll be up early to slide my feet through the snow. The Wraith on the other hand... well, that's going to take some effort. It caught a wind gust BAD and took off clear… Continue

It is 5:40 in the morning as I begin this post. Clearly I have failed in one of last year's resolutions to always get myself to bed at a sane hour. My other resolutions were for weight training, and putting.
The weight training resolution wasn't a total failure, but it wasn't a success either. It lasted me for five weeks, into the middle of February. At that point I caught the flu, lost a lot of strength, and never went back to the rec center. I finally picked it back up in early… Continue

Well, since Justin has been begging for it... I guess I'll recount the improbability of yesterday. The title of the post pretty much gives away what happened.
I spent the past couple of weeks doing field work and telling myself that I was doing everything I could to facilitate a win in Open at the unsanctioned tournament on January 1st at Norwalk, Ohio's Great Blue Heron DGC. But even through all of that, I don't think I totally believed I could pull off a win.
We got there at… Continue

Doubles is really a frustrating thing. When you're on, it doesn't matter. Well, unless you're absolutely on
to a sick level.... but it doesn't matter, usually, if you've got a weak partner. Some locals consider it taboo to call certain veterans of the community "weak" partners. Today I drew Paul Hawk, and he's one of my favorite draws. I have more fun playing with Hawk on my card than anybody else. But he is also a sub-850 player. He can have his days on the green, putting the disc… Continue

DISCLAIMER: This post is littered with sarcasm. For example, that
first paragraph just below this? Dripping with the whole sarcasm thing.
True story. Keep in mind that this is a Blog... It is a web log of my

myself as a primary character and as the main example when I'm talking
Did you know that on the 8th day, God created me? True story. Just ask

Not much going on in my disc golf world. Just a lot of field work over the course of the past few days. I was red hot yesterday on the green. I did the same thing I've been doing for the last week: backhand hucks out, forehand comebackers to the basket, and then putt from the spots the forehands land at. I also added in some work with my mids, backhand out and back both, though some work has been done with Buzzz forehands.
On my third set through, today, I hucked my Destroyer out on a… Continue
