October 21st the disc golf course at Turtle Rock Park was approved by the Alpine County Board. I assisted David Peets (Alpine Co. Assessor) with the presentation to the board. It was a slam dunk. No one was opposed. Their response was "So, you want to build a disc golf course in an unused part of the park, with volunteer labor, and pay for the equipment with private funds? Okay". Yup, just let us use our public land and we will get it done. We are a self sustaining sport. No subsidies for us.
The park is 1/2 hour south/west of Carson City, Nevada, and 1/2 hour east of Kirkwood, California. The area is well known as a great fishing destination. Grover Hot Springs is near by. Lake Tahoe is about 40 minutes away. Camping is available right next to the course. However it is closed for the season. We should get a little snow, but the course will be open all year. Great news for Tahoe golfers!
The property is well treed with good elevation change and a seasonal creek flowing through the course. The layout will be short to medium in length. The baskets will be discatchers, with fly18 tee pads. Three pin placement for each hole.
As I start the design process, Dave Peets will head up the fund raising. $1000 per hole sponsor. I am guessing the course will be ready to play next spring. But check back for future progress.
