First new course of 2009 and post- 2008 tour!
I went out and played the new Waterloo State Rec. Area course in Grass Lake, MI today because it's about freezing, almost no snow to be found, and without any wind- best chance you will get here this time of year.
It's 27 miles from my door to the parking lot, a dozen more than Hudson Mills but only a few extra minutes because 2/3 of the way is by I-94.
Cost of parking was 6$ or 24$ yearly so I just got the yearly.
Disclosure: It was designed by my dad and Pad Timmons from Discraft.
It's 9 holes, but to become 18 holes sometime soon this year. Chainstar baskets, a message board, ample parking, state park facilities. Wooden posts on each side to form a dirt tee box (I believe cement eventually), with temporary laminated tee signs and some next tee markers mean you can navigate it easily. It's all in the woods except for one uphill basket in the open and then the next tee is in the open, shooting downhill into the woods and is the longest hole at around 370'. Decent length, no really short hole under 200' and one uphill hole plays longer than it looks. Favors RHBH more than anything - with the first 3 of 4 holes being RHBH favoring and only maybe 2 holes that favor a LHBH or RHF shot. SO, hopefully the back 9 was laid out to counteract that. It could be rough off the fairway but this time of year without leaves it's not so bad. Will be way more poison ivy than any course around here. Several sharp turns in the woods. Hole #9- I can hopefully talk my dad into adjusting the tee pad back and to the left and the basket up and to the right to smoothen out then very akward fairway angle there.
