I've been working on three new shots for me:
A hyzer flip
An anhyzer flex
a sidearm, relatively new so improving
I went to Old Setttlers yesterday for a little field time and see which discs work best for me. The Sidewinder has been a really nice disc. I like it when it's flown flat and I can get it to go fast enough to go right at the end of it's flight on a standard backhand throw. It turns out that this understable disc is perfect for the hyzer flip. Sometimes I put the hyzer flip right into the ground. Sometimes it is beautiful. Today at Pease Park, for example, it flew further off the tee than any I've thrown there. One at old Settlers flew about 400 feet down the hill at hole 1. I thought it was going to go in the water but fortunately it stopped. What was reallyl impressive to me was throwing hole 18 up the hill. I'm usually happy getting up to the fence or the trees. I had a hyzer flip bounce off the basket. The great thing is I'm not really using anywhere near 100% of power to get a good distance flight.
The anhyzer flex is another distance shot I've been working on. It's best to use overstable discs for this so I've been throwing my Starfire's for this one. I was able to put both Starfire's under hole 1 at Old Settlers for easy putts into the basket 380' downhill from the tee. This was on back to back throws so maybe I'm getting the motion down. This shot came in handy at Pease on a hole that crosses water with a tree to the left. It seemed weird to practically aim for the stream and hope the last fade of the overstable disc would carry it across. It did.
I've been working on sidearms for longer. I do remember wishing for a sidearm the last time I went to Pease so it was nice to have it on one short 234' hole that curves kind of right. The sidearm over shot it some and it was a nice line for the hole. The best sidearm for me has been a Discraft XS. The Sidewinder does good for long shots and the Star Max is good for discs that have to turn hard right. I don't have enough speed to learn a sidearm hyzer flex but theres' some good information on the Disc Golf Review Site.
I'm going to try to make it to the Disc Nation
clinic today for the free driving clinic by Jay and Des Reading in South Austin. Most Wednesdays I have to work later or watch the kids when my wife works late. We'll see how it works out today.
I hope I remember these shots next month when I have a lot more work. In the meantime, I still suck when playing with people around compared to when practicing. I lost by 10 strokes when our Central Texas Disc Golf Meetup
played Wilco Saturday. Jason Gillia
won at +2 over. I wound up coming in 4th on our large card of 6. I still had a great time.
